For about the past 8 - 10 months i've been having weird pain in the back of my hand. it is right in/below the knuckle below the index finger. it's a sharp pain that is intense enough that it feels like its burning. it is not constant. it happens if i pick something up with my fingers or if i press down as though i were doing a push-up.

i'm too stubborn/lazy/busy to go to the doctor. anyone know anything about this sort of thing?

Did you do anything 8-10 months ago? Climbing, or a fall or anything? Is it red or swollen? Joint pain anywhere else. Tired? Sick?

Some ideas: de Quervain's tendinosis or thumb extensor sprain, capsulitis, degenerative or inflammatory arthritis, game keepers thumb, scaphoid fracture. I'd get an x-ray to rule out the latter ideas...they're fairly cheap and easy to take.

thanks--i need to get off my ass and go see a physician. it isn't red or swollen. there are no extra lumps, bumps, or nodules. the thumb doesn't seem to be involved. no 'clicking' of tendon or ligaments. it's just frustrating. there's no specific even associated with the pain. it easily could've started from doing some climbing last summer, shoveling an epic amount of dirt out of my backyard, arthritis?, who knows. i'm a clutz and don't notice when i hurt myself sometimes.

thanks DeC -- i already know that i'm old. but i'm not THAT old like you. i was actually hoping for some info from folks who have had similar pain since climbers seem to have the occasional bit of hand tendon/ligament injuries.
