Zenolith Posted March 15, 2001 Posted March 15, 2001 I have some old WC rigid stem Friends and a 0-Metolius that need new slings. I've never done this b4. What do you all recomend? These things are old and severely beaten but I still use them. Is there any guideline for retiring a cam when it is old but not damaged? Quote
AJ Posted March 15, 2001 Posted March 15, 2001 I bought some DMM cams last year (by the way, they work great). The instructions that came packaged with them had some new CE warnings, etc. Anyway, from what I recall they recommended a useful life of 10 years maximum (depending on wear). It is probably a swag, but they seemed to be concerned that some damage will accumulate with use and you should eventually retire them. So, if your cams are old and you have "any" doubts - retire them. If your cams are in good shape, you feel comfortable climbing on them and you just want them re-slung I hear that OnSight in Squamish, BC does good work and pretty inexpensive. I recall a past partner getting them to do some custom work on the slings for a pretty reasonable cost. Quote
Guest Posted March 15, 2001 Posted March 15, 2001 Metolius will repair your cams the next time you're at Smith. Even WC ones. I think BD does too, check w/them. There may be some info here: http://www.fishproducts.com/tech/techweenie.html , look for "reslinging cams". Quote
erik Posted March 15, 2001 Posted March 15, 2001 trango also reslings cams for a reasonable price. Quote
sLy Posted March 15, 2001 Posted March 15, 2001 I just had my WC rigid Friends re-slung at Onsight Equipment (Squamish), and they did a really good job. They charge $5 Cdn a Friend, and the turn-around is really quick. I just had to include a cheque for the work and the return postage. Call Peder Ourom or Kris Wild at (250) 898-3332 for the details. Onsight's mailing address is PO Box 1379, Garibaldi Highlands, V0N 1T0. Lyle Quote
TimL Posted March 15, 2001 Posted March 15, 2001 Metolius and BD will re-sling and re-wire your cams for $8.00 per cam including shipping back to you. All you have to do is call the company and get a RA # and send it to them. I sent 2 cams to Metolius and received them back in about a month and they were just about brand new. Good luck! Quote
