Mikerodg Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 I'm taking our boy scout patrols out to snow cave. I'm thinking an igloo would a better option. Any tips on construction shortcuts and techniques would be appreciated. Quote
rob Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 Freedom of the Hills has some good info on snow shelters. Quote

catbirdseat Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 Let the snow conditions dictate whether or not you build an igloo. You need consolidated snow that makes good blocks if you want to make an igloo. Sometimes you can dig a pit to get down to the sort of snow you would need, but it is more work. Â I'd go with the snow cave. Quote
catbirdseat Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 http://www.clubtread.com/sforum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=19903 This group is using a gadget into which you shovel loose snow. It does not require blocks, but it does require snow that is cohesive. If conditions are too cold, this method might not work. Quote
blueserac Posted January 30, 2007 Posted January 30, 2007 Have you considered going straight to the source for ingloo technology? I hope you find these to be fun: http://www.nfb.ca/enclasse/doclens/visau/index.php?mode=view&language=english&filmId=11340&PHPSESSID=9242ff87edd3d99f76f30888649f3daa http://www.arcticomi.ca/iglu.html Quote
