catbirdseat Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 PI Article We still aren't getting the whole story. The captain of the ship was transferred because of this accident, but it wasn't his fault. The support crew members who dropped the divers to 190 ft are to blame. Quote
KaskadskyjKozak Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 My first thought on reading this was the possibility that they played a "joke" on the divers to scare them (let out extra rope so they'd get lost/freaked out under the ice - ha ha ha). Quote
JosephH Posted November 22, 2006 Posted November 22, 2006 It doesn't matter if it's a sub hitting a boat or a sea mount or an incident like this, it's imperative to hold ship captains accountable. If not things can get out of hand pretty quickly. The captain is mainly responsible for the operating "tone" of the crew relative to how much effort and professionalism they put into their jobs. Think of it more like the head of Yosar not paying attention to a creeping sense on his team that it's alright to be cavalier about belaying (which is exactly what happened in this ice diving accident). catbirdseat Posted November 22, 2006 Author Posted November 22, 2006 I hadn't thought of it that way, but you are right. The accident was caused by a bad belay. Quote
kevbone Posted November 29, 2006 Posted November 29, 2006 it's alright to be cavalier about belaying Ant that the truth! Quote
