dinomyte Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 (edited) Climb: Mt. Jefferson-South Ridge Date of Climb: 9/30/2006 Trip Report: Kevin Matlock and I climbed Jeff this weekend. We hiked in and bivied at Shale Lake on Friday, and got up at 4:00 am for the climb. We bushwhacked to a point on the South Ridge, just north of Goat Peak and climbed up the ridge to the top. The rest of the TR is in pictures: Here is the goal - Jeff through the trees. The rock on the south ridge was absolutely solid. Great footing all the way. No choss at all. The Terrible Traverse was also solid. Lots of great holds and no exposure whatsoever! I didn't have to wait in line 20 minutes behind a group of Mazamas on the summit pitch. And the rock was not covered in snow and ice. Perhaps the glacier route would have been better. No crevasses at all. I was visibly disappointed to be back at the Red Saddle in one piece, after crossing the Traverse again. The celebratory beers back at the truck were barely drinkable! Obviously, I'm being a bit sarcastic here. Worst rock I've ever seen. I would suggest climbing earlier in the season. Gear Notes: No pads, no helmets....just balls. Just kidding, of course we had helmets! Edited October 2, 2006 by dinomyte Quote
hawkeye69 Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 nice! thanks for sharing. that is one big piece of choss. beautiful though... Quote
Kevin_Matlock Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 got half way through the TR and thought "what the fuck is he talking about????" or "was I on some other climb???". Worst rock I've ever seen. I would suggest climbing earlier in the season. what he said. also don't be taken in by the idea of a climbers trail to/from Hunts cove. instead just invest the extra 1/2 mile or so and take the PCT. pup_on_the_mountain Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 What a shitty TR . Awful pictures as well! My brains ached reading it. Of course I'm being sarcastic . Quote
magellan Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 This is not the first TR to feature a guy with glowing balls and another guy lifting a leg to launch flaming gas. Quote
cheamclimber Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 haha..the rock reminds me of what i get in the Cheam range, fortunately i dont find it difficult or scary at all. looks like going right up the face would be a blast. Quote
