I'm headed there for a few weeks. We are mostly interested in the areas around Meteora and Kalymnos... I was curious if anyone here had been there before, or had any words of encouragment. I'll be there from mid to late Sept. And no, this is not a quest for The Nodder.

Kalymnos has everything sport, if you're into overhanging limestone. The routes are very well bolted on the whole, and the sweet spot of routes--when I was there last--is in the 5.10+ to 5.12 range. There are a lot of harder climbs, but i can't pull down that hard, so ...

Meteora couldn't be more different. Instead of limestone, it's conglomerate and it's more about super delicate edging. I love it. The scenery is a trip too. Almost all of the routes are bolted, but many are bolted german style, with just a couple of bolts and you are expected to use nuts or cams for the rest of the route. There are a ton of modern routes with lots of bolts, and they're what I prefer there.

You really can't camp on Kalymnos in any practical way, but there is camping at Meteora.

They love Nescafe in Athens??? (you can pay 5-6 bucks for a "Nescafe Frappe"). They drink it w/ straws?

Watch the motorcyclists...

What's up w/ the dogs and cats around town? They look like well fed strays?

So far, the weather is FAB, Greece seems totally great, Athens is a very lively city. Now for the islands!

Thanks for the tips Crackers...

I am willing to bet you haven't actually tasted a frappe yet. THEY ARE AWESOME. It might take you a try or two before you find a good one, but mmmmhh. They are so good. They are what north american coffee shops are trying and failing to make.

there is decent climbing in crete and santorini but kalymnos is way ahead of the game. try the british guy's bar for beta, the current guide book and all that jazz...

Well, I tasted a few of their frappe's and they really were Nescafe. But I'm not judging the country on it's "frappe" anyway. wink.gif

I've hear that the greeks were "gruff" but that just isn't so on Kalymnos. The attitude on this island is 100% climber friendly. It's almost shocking, as soon as the cab dropped me off, folks were handing me the route guide and letting me know about updated conditions, etc. I suppose that this island is a bit off of the main tourist circuit, so you can sense a bit of its need for some sort of tourism... Imagine, an island that relies on climbers AND loves them... OMG...

Also, I'm rather impressed w/ how reasonable the prices are on food and lodging - 20 euros a night for studio w/ 2 beds, furnished kitchen, private bath... (not in Athens though).

As for the climbing, yeah, all sport, but hey it IS fun and the rock is good. I felt guilty skipping Yosemite for this place, but being a classical history major, I had to go for it. Plus it's interesting to be the only American around. Though I suppose I could fit in better if I wore a bananna sling, spandex and carried more European labels(oddly, I noticed that Greeks love American t-shirts) smile.gif More later...

Very cool. Looking forward to a full tr with pics, etc. at some point. I was in the Meteora area w/ my folks back in 1999 (? can't remember), not climbing. I kept staring upwards at the walls and thinking 'OMG I have to ditch the baggage and find some climbers!'. Never did, tho... next time.
