joejr Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=48.83111&lon=-121.60167 Is Winnies Slide mislabeled on the USGS map? Is The Hourglass really Hell's Highway? Thanks, Joe Quote
letsroll Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 don't remember about winnies slide, but hourglass is really hells's highway. Have not traveled to that spot, but in planning a North face climb that we had to bail on I discovered the problem looking at the pics in guide books (our decent route). Quote
MisterMo Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 (edited) Winnies Slide = the steep snow slope between top of Fischer Chimneys and the Curtis Glacier Hell's Highway = the "flat" on upper Curtis Glacier that you stroll across Hourglass = the snow/ice exit from curtis Glacier to the upper Sulphide I don't have a map here to see how the gov labels it. oops, duh, you linked one. I think the Hourglass is correctly labeled, but Winnies Slide is not. Edited May 18, 2006 by MisterMo Quote
genepires Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 Hells Highway is the major glacier chute between the sulphide and curtis glacier. It is called hells highway due to the bizarre tortured crevassed nature there. Hells highway is definately not the flat part of anything. Hourglass is a steep gulley to the left of hells highway (maybe four hundred yards) that has some thick waterice in the winter (visable from ski area) and holds snow for part of the summer. A spicier alternative to the highway. As per Beckey guide. Quote
