barkernews Posted December 10, 2005 Posted December 10, 2005 I'm thinking of skinning up to Crater Rock and trying to ski down the White River Glacier to Highway 35 tomorrow. Anyone done this that can offer any advice? Is this recommended? Any beta would be great! Thanks! Quote
Couloir Posted December 10, 2005 Posted December 10, 2005 The skinning up will be fabulous...all the way to CR. It is really awesome snow right now. On the WRG descent, maybe Iain or someone else can speak more to this, but I'd be careful on this right now. There hasn't been THAT much snow up there. I would be nervous skiing that glacier this early. However, the WRG has the benefit of having a lot of what fell last week on the Palmer blown into it filling in a lot of the cracks. It doesn't take much to smooth things over. Maybe be on the safe side and just don't go alone. Then at least if one of you drop , the other can get to the other quickly. Otherwise, have a blast. cicleclimb Posted December 10, 2005 Posted December 10, 2005 I'd think seriously about avalanche's too. In upper heather at meadow's I saw a 6 foot avalanche crown - scary stuff. Quote
kioti Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 Couloir is right about the conditions, they were awesome on Thursday all the way up. I was in White River Drainage a few weeks ago, and it still needed to fill in. With the dump of snow last week, that very well might have been filled in, but I know that the river crossings were a little sketch. Have fun! Quote

barkernews Posted December 15, 2005 Author Posted December 15, 2005 No. We wimped out, slept late and skinned up towards Triangle Moraine. It was actually pretty sweet. We parked in Govy, hitched to Timberline and skinned up. The ride back down was great. Alpine was pretty icy, though. We're gonna wait until there's more snow... Thanks for the advice!!! Quote
