goldenchild Posted October 1, 2005 Posted October 1, 2005 I'm looking to buy a new/used pair of telemark skis and bindings. Just a beginner with the intent of practising on the resorts and progressing into the backcountry with them. I'm a downhill/AT skier right now and would just to try something different. I've never bought teles before and don't know how to size them. I'm 5'10" and weight 170 lbs. Also, what's the difference btwn a tele and slalom ski? Any recommendation on teles and bindings would be appreciated. Quote
kioti Posted October 1, 2005 Posted October 1, 2005 My recommendation for skis would be something along the lines of Atomic's TM 22 (renamed this year, but still around) or the Black Diamond Ethic. These skis will help you through learning the technique, they're pretty light too! My choice on binding is the 22designs (read: Rainey Designs) Hammerhead. It's the most positive feeling binding that I've skiied with. A bit expensive though. For an awesome cheaper alternative, go with the voile hardwire. (I think it's $125 and included shims, leashes, climbing wires) Sizing of skis for someone of your weight should be around 170 or so. Shorter will be easier for you (for the most part). Hope this helps. Get out and demo some skis as we get into the season (Snow level at 5000 feet in the N. Oregon Cascades!). Our recommendations realistically don't mean shit when it comes to what you'll like. Quote
shapp Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 Dude you don't need skis. Take a pair of your down hill boards, if you got some in the 170 to 185 range. Go pickup a pair of used bindings. Anything a couple years old is probably good, or the cheapest new alteranative is the plain old voile cable, about $85, simple cheap and basically destruct proof. Mount the bindings so that the pins on your boots rest on the chord center (there are other methods but this is easiest, look it up on the interent if you don't know chord center) and make sure your heel is centered on the ski. You don't need to go out and worry about how light your skis are now. You basically want to ski the lifts and figure it out. By then you might decided you want to stick to AT or you might fall in love with tele. Then you can go out and pick up some bad ass stix. However, make sure you get some new or lightly used plastic boots that fit your foot. If your feet aint comfy you defenitely won't like it. Good Luck Quote
