plexus Posted September 28, 2001 Posted September 28, 2001 Hiking up to Crater Mountain (east of Ross Lake) on Monday. Figuring will in the area to get a summit. Beckey bible not too helpful with route description. Class 2, 3, 4? Loose or solid rock? Glacier travel? Picture shows glacier near the route. Any info would be helpful so I know what to pack. Thanks Quote
mattp Posted September 28, 2001 Posted September 28, 2001 A friend of a friend of mine who has bagged every 9,000 footer in the state was said to have said that it is very tough to go the way the book suggests. He reported that it had a lot of travel on horrendous rock, though I'm not sure if that meant talus or cliff or both. This report is both old and third hand, so I wouldn't place too much weight on it, but then again you may want to go up there expecting something requiring more effort than a short side trip. Quote
philfort Posted September 28, 2001 Posted September 28, 2001 Crater mtn route is well-traveled class 2 (steep though), solid from what I remember. Very well-marked with paint on the rocks :-( No glacier travel. It's basically a 6000ft hike, with some scrambling on top. [This message has been edited by philfort (edited 09-28-2001).] Quote
plexus Posted September 28, 2001 Author Posted September 28, 2001 Phil, Kinda like Vesper East Slope? The mountain itself is fun but the trail to the white rock is kinda crappy. Were the views worth it on Crater? Are there remains of the orginal lookout? Quote
philfort Posted September 28, 2001 Posted September 28, 2001 I think it was a whiteout when we were on it. But I'm sure the views are great. The scrambling near the top was fun. Crater was a backup plan when Jack mtn didn't work out. We also climbed the east peak, which had one 4th class step. Yeah, there are remains up there. Not much left, but I do remember a large metal pole. trip report: http://praxis.etla.net/~philfort/Jack/Jack.html Quote
nolanr Posted October 2, 2001 Posted October 2, 2001 I was on Golden Horn and Mt. Hardy this weekend, I think I probably saw Crater Mtn., and trust me, the views will be worth it. Quote
