Jedi Posted May 23, 2005 Posted May 23, 2005 This morning, I called Kodak to ask them a question about my slide projector lens. Kodak has stopped making slide projectors. They are a thing of the past. They refered me to a "local repair" shop in a nearby big city. They fella there said they really don't see slide projectors anymore and most manufactures have stopped making them (well the better slide projectors). Made me think of the stack of slides trays on the bookshelf. Probably 800 ot 900 slides. I'm good now but in ten years, if I break my projector, I guess I''l have to to come up with something else. I guess a GOOD slide scanner will be a must. Then a projector like the ones for watching TV will be in order. Pricey setup now. Maybe it will be cheaper down the road. Can anyone recommend a good slide scanner that is not too expensive. The one I have presently, well...it sucks. Jedi Quote
salamander Posted May 23, 2005 Posted May 23, 2005 Jedi, Hey man! Met you this winter at Frankenstein in NH... I was climbing with the Australians. I've has some similar issues recently. Although quickly disappearing in stores there are many good projectors still out there. I bought one last year on Ebay in great shape for cheap money. I own literally thousands of slides and finally broke down and bought a scanner. If you care at all about having a quality high resolution scan, i would fork out the money and buy one of the Nikon dedicated slide scanners (current generation is Coolscan V). You can find them for about $500 if you look around. Even though it cut into my gear/travel spending it was well worth the cash for me. Quote
John Frieh Posted May 23, 2005 Posted May 23, 2005 I ponyed up for a Nikon Coolscan also. Worth it and I feel I didn't lose any quality from the slide. Make sure you get someone who is a student buy it at student pricing for the best price (but still be prepared to drop a grand for a nicer model + a tray loader). Quote
mtn_mouse Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 I just found out that slide projectors are dinasours too, last week I called up to order some accessories for my slide projectors and was told kodak does not make them or parts either. Felt bad, almost as bad as when my dog died. Quote
ketch Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 Kodak no longer makes an Ektagraphic III projector. There is several others and accesories if needed. I use quite a few of these but they are all quickly going the way. If any of ya all desperatly need slide stuff I'm sure you can get hooked up. Quote
MisterMo Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 Massive bummer. I can sympathize. On the shelves above me are six thousand or so catalogued slides...my whole adult life...... Good thing I've got a spare bulb. Guess I'll be shopping more seriously for a scanner as well. Looking through the Nikon models it appears that dollars=speed, and also that the coolest ones require lots of memory and a fast processor, meaning that I'll probably have to break down & buy a new demon box at the same time. Either way it'll take LOTS of rainy days to get all those pix to disk. Quote
