has anyone heard/been up the south route to mt. hood lately? with the beautiful northwest weather i have spring fever. thinking about going early saturday, any reports??

so far as i know conditions haven't gotten any worse than a mindless slog, so boring and ugly you'll concider chewing off your tongue for some stimulus, all the while right next to a ski lift with people having way more fun than you will be on pretty ho-hum ski terrain.

My friend, Roy, and I climbed the route yesterday and had a great day. Met another climber who said he's climbed it a couple times a year for the past twenty years and yesterday was the best weather he's climbed in. Saw a total of 5 other climbers.

 

Parts of the climb were a slog sure but what climb doesn't have a slog factor? The Hogsback and Pearly Gates were fun. We left our snowshoes in the car but I wish we would have brought them. Used crampons from Hogsback on up. Beautiful day.

went up saturday as planned. white-out conditions, visibility from 5-10ft from 5am. most climbers returning after reaching top of palmer chair. larger storm coming in after we reached parking lot.

i got word today that the clouds opened up at 10,500k, so the top was nice, but the storm was stii blowing on the way back down. should be good climbing this week!
