It might not be as bad as you make it out to be- lots of people commute responsibly (bus/bike etc) and then have a biggish monster-truck type thing to get out in the hills. I can't afford to have one vehicle for gas-conscious highway driving, and a separate high-clearance vehicle for dirt rut-fests, so I sold my soul and got something that would go everywhere I wanted to go, and bike-commute during my 9-5. Is that hypocrisy? Sure. It's my compromise between competing ideals. If you run around deriding every compromise, you're setting yourself up for some fine self-loathing. unless, of course, you have no ideals.....
