JoshK Posted May 29, 2004 Posted May 29, 2004 Saw it tonight. So bad it's good! The special effects are definiltey pretty neat, so it's a much better theater movie than rental. The best part was the dipshit vice president and president who were obviously patterened after cheney and bush. The Cheney guy even sort of looked like a younger version of him. The bush guy, when confronted with some critical decision, just asks the cheney guy what to do...hahaha Pretty amusing all and all. Also featured was the charlet moser pulsar ice tool! and some north face tent (maybe a mountain 25) that they never managed to guy out very well. As expected the walls were always flapping about when they were in it. Quote
Ratboy Posted May 29, 2004 Posted May 29, 2004 I was flipping through the channels last night and on one of the 24 hour news channels they were having a very intense poltical pundit discussion about how this movie was causing a political uproar, with once side talking about how the makers of the movie have done a disservice to the world by portraying climate chance without showing how it can be avoided, after all this is a serious topic, and the other side going on about how they were alienating swing voters and that could be bad for Kerry and I just kept thinking.... It's just a fucking disaster movie! Quote
JoshK Posted May 29, 2004 Author Posted May 29, 2004 yeah, the political uproar is idiotic. It's no different that the volcano ones wiping out LA or whatever. I'm not sure how it would alienate swing voters away from kerry. If anybody is dumb enough to vote based on a hollywood disaster movie...well... Quote

But it's not a question of arriving at a response by the process of reflection and factual review, right? The administration etal is concerned that this movie will affect the masses the same way that their propaganda machine does: behavioral change via the stimulation of the fear-response. Plus, it's harder to politicize a volcano (within the context of current events....) Quote
JoshK Posted May 30, 2004 Author Posted May 30, 2004 Very true, the movie has about as much reality as the crap the bush-cheney campaign kicks out. If the movie somehow sways enough people to swing the vote against bush, then it'll be one of the best movies ever released, IMHO Quote
catbirdseat Posted May 30, 2004 Posted May 30, 2004 You've no doubt heard the term "willful suspension of disbelief"? This film requires the "willfull suspension of neocortical functions". Quote
nolanr Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 Don't mean to ruin the political discussion going on here, but if you like "so bad they're good" kind of movies ya gotta rent "Torque." For the first half it just seems like a needless, mediocre movie. Then all hell breaks loose and it goes completely off the deep end and beyond even the slightest resemblance of believability. That's when it got good of course. I laughed and laughed. Of course I was fully expecting that and wasn't disappointed. It does to motorcycles what "Vertical Limit" did to climbing. Quote
catbirdseat Posted June 1, 2004 Posted June 1, 2004 Plan Nine from Outer Space Jaws II Jaws II was so bad we laughed a bit too loudly and got kicked out of the theater. Quote
