jonthomp Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 (edited) Am planning on climbing the N. Face of Shuksan this Friday and Saturday (May 14/15) and am looking for any info on recent snow conditions. Anyone been in the area over this past weekend or within the last week? In general what are people finding out there? We're trying to move light and fast so soft snow could be problematic. ashw_justin Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 There was a foot of powder on Baker (above 6500 feet, Coleman-Deming route) last Thursday, with some evidence of developing windslab on leeward slopes (north-facing and such) due to high winds. Probably another few inches of snow over the last few days. I would personally be concerned about avalanche danger especially if windslab has developed on the North Face. And I would expect postholing. Quote
ashw_justin Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 To counter my last post, warming on Thursday should settle things down a bit, but I bet there will still be postholing. Also, under the new snow is a strong rain crust (I think). So you make the call. Quote
ddday Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 Hmmm! snow might be good and settled with a warm week coming up. However, you might want to bring a bottle of Single Malt to share with your buddy if you pull up short due to postholing or slide danger. Quote
ashw_justin Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 bottle of Single Malt to share with your buddy Aberlour... Check! Quote

JoshK Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 If we can't climb at least we can drink. Or bring a girl as a climbing partner, then you won't even really care about summiting Quote
ashw_justin Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 hey, did you guys go to Stuart? I had to bail for Mother's Day. Quote
jonthomp Posted May 10, 2004 Author Posted May 10, 2004 Thanks for the info. Looks like the best bet is to head up and see. If nothing else we can plop down on a rock and pass the scotch back and forth. Quote
ddday Posted May 10, 2004 Posted May 10, 2004 Certainly somebody was out on N. Slopes last weekend and can give us some beta on snow conditions. Quote
