catbirdseat Posted February 25, 2004 Posted February 25, 2004 That doesn't sound right given that the liver is the organ that is largely responsible for removing alcohol from the blood. Relatively little alcohol is excreted in the urine. Quote
klenke Posted February 25, 2004 Posted February 25, 2004 Curious: what happens to the alcohol after the liver processes it? Is it turned into something else? Enlighten me please. Quote
Alpinfox Posted February 25, 2004 Posted February 25, 2004 Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) is produced by liver cells and converts alcohol to acetylaldehyde (toxic) which is converted to acetic acid (vinegar) by acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, etc, etc...  Interestingly, there is a mushroom that produces an inhibitor of ADH, so if you eat that mushroom (Alcohol inky) and drink a beer, you will get very hammered.   http://chemcases.com/alcohol/alc-06.htm  Quote
catbirdseat Posted February 25, 2004 Posted February 25, 2004 It is converted to acetate which is burned for energy or used to make FAT. Quote
Dru Posted February 26, 2004 Author Posted February 26, 2004 Alcohol has 7 cal/gram, vs. 4 for proteins and carbs, and 9 for fat Dat's why the Russians drink vodka at winter bivis, well, one reason anyways. Quote
catbirdseat Posted February 26, 2004 Posted February 26, 2004 The one thing I've always wondered is how does the alcohol know to direct itself to the belly and no where else? Quote
