wayne
Headed up to Alaska to join the 20 parties on the West Ridge of Hunter, and I am wanting info on good plan B's in the area . Anybody know anything about the Kahiltna Peaks or things within the base camp area that doesnt require permits or Twight-like commitment? dkemp
Well, technically it wouldn't compare to anything on Hunter... but I've often wanted to hump it up Crosson, then travel the ridge to Kahiltna Dome, come down the upper Kahiltna from there to make a loop. I think that it would be some mighty fine hill-walkin'.
wayne
I have considered Crosson as a way to poach Foraker. Has anyone been able to do peaks like this without a permit? What is the penalty?
Marko
Howdy Wayne! Sultana shouldn't be a problem sans permit. Not many patrols on the peak. It's a long slog up and over Crosson but with cool views on the other side! It's also very exposed to the nasty weather from the W. Cheers, Mark (from NY Gully) Complacency kills. dkemp
Yep, Crosson is the popular approach to Sultana Ridge. Fee required, perhaps not enforced, for Foraker but not for Crosson or Kahiltna Dome.
