Dustin_B
from here 0845 AM PST Thursday, December 18, 2003 ********************************************************** ZONE AVALANCHE FORECASTS..... SNOWPACK SYNOPSIS.... With relatively light winds, considerable warming, and no precipitation on Wednesday, recent wind slabs formed during warmer temperatures and increased winds on Tuesday have begun to settle and consolidate, along with continued slow stabilization of older buried weak layers that remain beneath the 2-5 feet of snow received last week. While this is producing a slowly decreasing avalanche danger, some natural, human triggered and explosive controlled avalanching is continuing, with a snowmobiler triggering and being buried by a slide near Blewett Pass on Wednesday afternoon , and loose and slab slides also reported near Mt Baker. Hence considerable avalanche danger remains above 6000 feet where strongest recent winds were received and slides remain probable, with a moderate danger and slides possible at lower elevations. mtn_mouse
So that's what happened. I was in Wenatchee yesterday, at the Chelan Co fire district 1 station, and a helicopter landed to pick up some SAR folks. They said they were heading out to Blewett pass for an avalanche vs snowmobile situation. I never saw anything in the news about it though. Did they get the guy out? slaphappy
They got him out, but a day late. What a tragedy. Be careful out there no matter what your passion is.
pindude
Victim was among a group of 4 snowmobilers. From KXLY news story : "Rescue crews say McDougal was the only one in his group not carrying a transmitter beacon."
