mtn_mouse Posted October 2, 2003 Posted October 2, 2003 Ok, I need beta on Mt McLaughlin. Having done about all of the cascade volcanoes, I see Mclaughlin still on the list. Since a friend wants to do it, I am thinking of going along, but will I be majorly bored with the climb (hike)? Anybody want to share any info on the peak? Quote
Lambone Posted October 2, 2003 Posted October 2, 2003 Non-Technical climb from the south side. About 8 miles from trailhead to summit. Dry scree trail now, would be more fun as an early climb/ski. It's a good work out, once the weather cools, in mid summer it's just hot. I haven't heard about any other routes, but the North side looks like it has some killer ski terrain. Are you from southern Oregon? I'm in Ashland and looking for a partner. Quote
mtn_mouse Posted October 3, 2003 Author Posted October 3, 2003 Nope, I live over near Lewiston, ID. Long way to McLaughlin, so I am a little hesitant to drive that far unless I have time for other peaks in the area. Spring skiing there sounds better anyway. I used to visit the Trinity Alps a lot while going to college there. Humboldt marching lumberjacks. Mostly I went into the T alps on skis in the winter. Thompson peak is a fun class 3 winter climb. But lots of serious avalanches in the canyon creek area. Very big and active. Tomorrow, a friend and I will climb Chief Joseph Mountain in the Wallowas. Awesome fall weather. Quote
Lambone Posted October 3, 2003 Posted October 3, 2003 Cool, Yeah, wait till spring on Mcloughlin. It'd be more fun as a snow climb/glissade or ski. Thielson or Jefferson might be a good link up. Have fun! Quote

Its very commonly skied in the spring, though (as mentioned) and this is a great time to do it. You can make a Spring skiiing trip out of it...ski Middle and South Sisters, Broken Top, McGloughlin, Hood, Shasta, whatever... Alex Quote
