gapertimmy Posted August 20, 2003 Posted August 20, 2003 anybody use this? http://www.vonage.com looks pretty dope, and best part of it you could ditch qwest. Quote
Ursa_Eagle Posted August 20, 2003 Posted August 20, 2003 they say it's a broadband phone company... too bad they don't have broadband internet (or maybe they do and I'm an idiot who can't read a website) Quote
gapertimmy Posted August 20, 2003 Author Posted August 20, 2003 nope, you supply the 'net pipe, they give you the phone service... but for what i pay for my qwest line, this would only be about $10 more a month, and free service to canada so those late night phone sex-a-thons with drul wouldn't cost a dime. Fejas Posted August 20, 2003 Posted August 20, 2003 All the other free shite that comes with it makes up for the extra $10... the problem arpears to be if you were to shut off your cable service you would have to shut off your phone as well... might not be an issue for you though... Qwest sux arss... Quote
lI1|1! Posted August 20, 2003 Posted August 20, 2003 supposedly there is a way with the latest version of instant messenger to have a voice conversation over the net with broadband. the old versions of IM could do this but then firewalls blocked it, but the latest IM gets around it. i haven't used it, but somebody's telling me he uses it to talk to his research collegues in sweden a lot. gapertimmy Posted August 20, 2003 Author Posted August 20, 2003 yep you can do voip on IM, but this service gives you a physical phone number. from my understanding, you take the router with you, and your phone number follows you.. kind of nice. also for folks with lots of relatives in one area, say CA or NY, you can get a local number for that area, but your calls would ring at your home in WA or OR. i'm looking at ditching my qwest line and getting my wife a cell phone, or possibly this, i like this b/c her sister just moved to canada so she could call her whenever she wanted. only draw back for me, we couldn't have a local 541 number, so folks calling us from around here would have ot either call my cell, or call long distance (which is gay) Quote
