I know I should just roam around and find the shit myself, and I will of course.....but does anyone know where on Hood I can perfect my snow traveling skills? Steep, safe places to self-arrest, set up snow pro, and plunge step...seracs to practice traveling through, etc.

Anna,

Watch your step if you go up on the elliott glacier. it is really opened up right now and there are people in that glacier that have never been found. I skied off snow dome last wed. (between the elliott and coe glaciers) and there was just enough snow to make it all the way to the timberline trail via the langille glacierette. Up high the mountain was rerally speaking to me, loudly and with authority. it is the time of year that major rock fall occurs. I think you would be better served by going up on the palmer snowfield to practice your snow travel skills. the only hazard is the shrund at the hogs back and rockfall in the same area. below crater rock you will have no hazards. I used to climb a lot with the Eugene crowd but living in white salmon, I don't see them as much now. good luck. Jim

anna wave.gif,

you can always go up near the Eliot and stay to the left side (west) of the lateral moraine--on the way to the Cooper Spur route. there are some snowfields there that have no crevasses and are steep enough to practice cramponing and self arrest quite safely. just follow the trail from Cloud Cap to the big cairn and head up and left... you should find some good playgrounds within an hour's walk or so from the car. have fun. when are you coming to Smiff?

Thanks, I'm gonna just roam around and find what looks safe and fun this week (my weekend)...summitted Hood via Hogsback once and there are some good places up the Palmer Snowfield....wanted to try somewhere new...I will stay where it is safe.

I wanna come to Smiff during the last week of this month...are you game?
