jjd Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 I am planning on climbing Shasta's Casaval Ridge soon. I am wondering if there is typically a need for rock pro on this route? Any other advice about the route would be appreciated. Quote
robertm Posted June 12, 2003 Posted June 12, 2003 The route is mellow. You won't need rock pro or a rope. Take a walking axe, helmet and crampons and you are set. You weave around some rock formations but you don't actually climb the rock. It is kind of like a mellow lib ridge. Quote
Fairweather Posted June 12, 2003 Posted June 12, 2003 Better hurry! Casaval Ridge is usually out of shape by mid to late June. Quote
alienPDX Posted June 13, 2003 Posted June 13, 2003 I'll second that about the route falling out of shape early. Last year it was out by mid May, and when I drove by Shasta last weekend the ridges were looking pretty melted out. Casaval is a cool, aesthetic route but is really an early season climb. Later on it becomes a loose scree slog. Quote
Rodchester Posted June 13, 2003 Posted June 13, 2003 Whopper, who posts here, calls it choss-a-val ridge. Quote
