Terminal_Gravity Posted December 21, 2001 Posted December 21, 2001 any word or idea on what the situation in Argentina is going to do for climbing this season Walstien, you having any second thoughts? Quote
chelle Posted December 21, 2001 Posted December 21, 2001 From what I've heard most of the unrest is in Buenos Aries. Mendoza is a reasonable sized city, but I wouldn't expect similar events there. If it reduces the crowds on Aconcogua a bit that would be a good thing for your trip. The Polish is getting more crowded every year... For local information email Fernando Grajales. He and his staff were really helpful to us last year. His web address is www.grajales.net Check your email. I finally sent those pics I promised. Cheers! W Posted December 21, 2001 Posted December 21, 2001 Actually, I read yesterday that Mendoza was one of the cities hit by a fair amount of rioting and looting- it was one of the cities that has been hit hardest by the poor economy, according to the news report I read. Quote
chelle Posted December 21, 2001 Posted December 21, 2001 W - thanks for passing that info along, I hadn't seen that information. That's a disappointment. I hope things stablize soon. Quote
wdietsch Posted December 21, 2001 Posted December 21, 2001 Hey TG, Better bring your groceries with you, looks like the shelves may be empty when you get there. THis is the NY Times yesterday..... "Tensions have been building for the last four days as poor people massed around supermarkets in the cities of Rosario, Concordia and Mendoza, demanding handouts and sometimes breaking down doors to loot. But the sporadic, isolated disturbances suddenly swelled in the predawn hours across the country today, even reaching the working- class slums surrounding the capital." http://www.nytimes.com/2001/12/20/international/20ARGE.html?ex=1009515600&en=d6cc4a3e75f6348a&ei=5006&partner=ALTAVISTA Quote

Andy_Bourne Posted December 22, 2001 Posted December 22, 2001 I have two friends down there right now climbing the Polish Glacier. They just got into basecamp, so they missed the riots apparently. They will be arriving back in Mendoza on January 5 or 6. I'll get an answer from one of them on that day and I'll post it here as soon as I know. Quote
Wallstein Posted December 23, 2001 Posted December 23, 2001 We are bringing guns and lots of money! My partner was also a gold glove boxer at one point so I am not to concerned about it. We will probably be buying all of our food in punta areneas chile, I don't think there is a problem with rioting down there. Quote
