Anyone been up there recently? I was wondering how far I'd have to hike my skis in.

Haven't been up there recently but was up there in February and was noting how little snow there was on the ground at that time. We were able to drive to within about a half-mile of the trailhead (or thereabouts). Of course, since February, Mother Nature has been busy making up for the lack of snow.

looks like a fun trip, thanks for the pics paul&sergio. How crevassed is that glacier? I was thinking of heading up ruth for a solo ski objective.

I don't know much about the crevassing of the glacier, so don't want to speculate too much. Last February was the first time up in the area for me. I've heard the glacier gets a crevasse in it in summer, but I wouldn't know for sure. Seems like you would be all right at this time of year. www.summitpost.com has some info on the peak, but not much.

You don't need to worry about crevasses on Ruth. There are a few cracks, but nothing to worry about at this time of year and if you stay close to the ridge, you'll be fine.

 

I took my dogs up there late last year and was comfortable enough with the few thin cracks that I let them run around unleashed.

I believe it was May or June when a friend of mine broke his leg on Mount Ruth becuase he hit a small crevasse in mid turn. The slot wasn't big enough to fall into or anything, but it was enough to seriously catch a ski! It was a nice clean break, though.

That sucks about your friend Matt I was up there mid-June (solo ski too, it's a good place for it) last year and didn't see any cracks. I think there's a photo in the Becky guide of the glacier in late season, fwiw.

 

The ski from the summit directly down to the creek if there is enough snow (instead of returning via Hannagan Pass) is excellent. As are the views.
