markseker Posted April 10, 2003 Posted April 10, 2003 does anyone know if it's possible to traverse to yocum ridge (approx 8200') from timberline without ascending to illumination saddle? i.e. going above mississippi head but below illumination rock? -m Quote
iain Posted April 10, 2003 Posted April 10, 2003 I tried that one time to climb sandy hw but found it pretty steep right below i rock. It was in early June so perhaps it is less so earlier in the year. Oregon Descents says go below the rock for its hood ski circumnavigation beta. I find the saddle to be the best choice, as it puts you on a relatively crevasse-free bench to walk over to yocum ridge. Quote
jaee Posted April 16, 2003 Posted April 16, 2003 True dat. You can go below the rock, but you need to go a few hundred feet below to get to stuff you can downclimb pretty easily. Then, you either have to climb down thru the icefall or go up and around it. I think its easier to drop thru the saddle and cruise down and around. Quote
