Ursa_Eagle Posted March 25, 2003 Posted March 25, 2003 Did anyone go up Hood yesterday? I'm curious as to what the conditions were like. I wanted to go, and the weather looked nice, but I figured I didn't want to take a vacation day to posthole my way up the south side, and I didn't feel like testing my avy rescue skills (or my partners) on any other routes. gapertimmy Posted March 25, 2003 Posted March 25, 2003 it was a warm day up high on bachelor. very nice in the am, little wind, but the storm started to roll in yesterday pm, and it is currently snowing here at the base. forecast for today calls for around 12'' tomorrow 9'' and the storm starts to peter out after that. temps at 9k expected to be in the low 20's and winds "moderate" to 65mph Quote
iain Posted March 25, 2003 Posted March 25, 2003 looks like we'll have an excellent "traditional" snow/ice climbing season in the oregon cascades, at least. Quote
znep Posted March 26, 2003 Posted March 26, 2003 We headed up Hood on Monday from the south side. It was a beautiful day until mid afternoon. Low winds, very clear. Snow was pretty good in most places, wind packed with up to a foot or so on top of a fairly firm crust in areas. We didn't start early and were moving slowly so ended up turning around just short of the summit around the top of the hogsback. Up until then it hadn't been icy at all, but was starting to get a bit icier. We turned around because the weather crashed just a bit too soon. We then had to hastily follow our wands down in a whiteout with some gusty winds at times, before darkness set in. Didn't see anyone else who we know summited the same day, saw one group of three that got a early start and turned around around crater rock since one of their party didn't want to continue, and there was a group of telemarkers we saw coming down from high enough that they could have summitted.
