he was a film director who was i believe before that an art critic, which for him meant that he was actually a frustrated artist. he lumped most critics into this group, arguing that they felt inadequate in pursuing their own artistic expressions, and therefore turned to villifying the work of others. a generalization, to be sure, but sometimes i swear i see this dynamic at work in myself and others.
