  1. Well, I used both Office and OO on my system. I had some real issues with graphics inserted into an OO doc keeping their appearance when a colleague would open it in M$ Word. SOme stability issues with the Writer and Impress was fairly slow in importing Powerpoint slides. I use Linux ( Fedora ) so OO is quite nice but I find myself firing up VMWare to run MS Office ( plus some other apps that my company has which are IE dependent )...but we are big on Linux :-)

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- George Takei, who as "Star Trek's" Sulu was part of the Starship Enterprise crew through three television seasons and six movies, has come out as a homosexual in the current issue of Frontiers, a biweekly Los Angeles magazine covering the gay and lesbian community.

Unicef bombs the Smurfs in fund-raising campaign for ex-child soldiers

    By David Rennie in Brussels

    (Filed: 08/10/2005)

The people of Belgium have been left reeling by the first adult-only episode of the Smurfs, in which the blue-skinned cartoon characters' village is annihilated by warplanes.

The short but chilling film is the work of Unicef, the United Nations Children's Fund, and is to be broadcast on national television next week as a campaign advertisement.

The animation was approved by the family of the Smurfs' late creator, "Peyo".

Belgian television viewers were given a preview of the 25-second film earlier this week, when it was shown on the main evening news. The reactions ranged from approval to shock and, in the case of small children who saw the episode by accident, wailing terror.

Unicef and the family company, IMPS, which controls all rights to the Smurfs, have stipulated that it is not to be broadcast before the 9pm watershed.

The short film pulls no punches. It opens with the Smurfs dancing, hand-in-hand, around a campfire and singing the Smurf song. Bluebirds flutter past and rabbits gambol around their familiar village of mushroom- shaped houses until, without warning, bombs begin to rain from the sky.

Tiny Smurfs scatter and run in vain from the whistling bombs, before being felled by blast waves and fiery explosions. The final scene shows a scorched and tattered Baby Smurf sobbing inconsolably, surrounded by prone Smurfs.

The final frame bears the message: "Don't let war affect the lives of children."

It is intended as the keystone of a fund-raising drive by Unicef's Belgian arm, to raise £70,000 for the rehabilitation of former child soldiers in Burundi.

Philippe Henon, a spokesman for Unicef Belgium, said his agency had set out to shock, after concluding that traditional images of suffering in Third World war zones had lost their power to move television viewers. "It's controversial," he said. "We have never done something like this before but we've learned over the years that the reaction to the more normal type of campaign is very limited."

Belgium prides itself on being the home of some of the world's most famous cartoon characters - from Tintin to Lucky Luke and the Smurfs, known to the Dutch- speaking half of the country as "Smurfen" and as "Schtroumpfs" to Belgium's French speakers.

The advertising agency behind the campaign, Publicis, decided the best way to convey the impact of war on children was to tap into the earliest, happiest memories of Belgian television viewers. They chose the Smurfs, who first appeared in a Belgian comic in 1958.

Julie Lamoureux, account director at Publicis for the campaign, said the agency's original plans were toned down.

"We wanted something that was real war - Smurfs losing arms, or a Smurf losing a head -but they said no."

The film has won tentative approval from the official Smurf fan club. A spokesman said: "I think it will wake up some people. It is so un-Smurf-like, it might get people to think."

Hendrik Coysman, managing director of IMPS, said: "That crying baby really goes to your bones." wsmurf08.jpg

The Votes Are Counted! It is suspected that George W. Bush will be the President of the United States of America for another four years. We expect his victory speech to begin at any moment. Stay tuned for further updates!

Kerry Concedes! Earlier today John Kerry conceded to the Elder Party. “The Elder Party obviously got more of their supporters out to the polls,” he said. At this point in the speech, the crowd began to chant “NO MORE YEARS!” and soon had completely drowned him out.

It's a Landslide for Cthulhu! Thanks to the Cthonians, a huge chunk of Ohio has slid into Lake Erie. Votes are still being tallied, although the question of whether now submerged precincts still count has been raised.

    12:44 A.M. - Nov 3, 2004

Democratic Party Hounds thwart the Elder Poll Watchers! Our fine Yithian Poll watchers were foiled tonight while shifting space-time to keep several places of polling open “after they should be.” Attempting to insure each and every registered Elder Party voter (even the dead) had a chance to cast a ballot the Yithian known only as Zrachachatak used a little known technique to do what he called “turn back time.”

Tindalosian Hounds, obviously in the employ of the Democrats, showed up to put a stop to the time shifting.

The Great Race may have been foiled this time, but they promised to return and contest the situation. With lawyers.

    12:22 A.M. - Nov 3, 2004

There is no such thing as Too Many Tentacles! The Elder Party has its "feelers" out, literally! Poll results are coming in! Mighty Cthulhu could very well be your next President. Stay tuned for updates later today!

  6. Paternal:

Grandfather worked as a baker and a longshoreman in Holland (Rotterdam) as well as in South Africa. Also served aboard several ships (Holland America , when it was still dutch), including fighting in Indonesia after WWII. Grandmother stayed home and emotionally scarred her children causing a diaspora ( my father emigrated to the US, one uncle moved to NZ, aunt moved to South Africa ).

He and my grandmother must have moved at least 20 times in their life (emigrating to South Africa after WWII and then back and forth few other times). Died of a heart attack in a train station in Utrecht while looking for a new apartment after their last move back from Kimberly ( he was in his 70s).

    Maternal:

Grandfather worked for the same banking company in Rotterdam for 50 years, except for a stint during WWII when he was in a camp and then building munitions in one of Speer's slave factories. Near the end of the war, he and his brother ( who was sick with TB) had to make their way back from eastern Germany to Rotterdam mostly by foot. After he retired, he realized he didn't have any hobbies and died after a heart attack in his 70's. That experience haunts me, and has motivated me to try a lot of things and develop activities and interests outside of work...

Grandmother was a homemaker ( damn good one ) and still is living ( in her 90s ). Hallo Oma!

  7. With frequent trips to NO, he doesn't have time to force Social Security reform down our throats anymore and [hopefully] Repubs will lose their stranglehold on Congress next year. hahaha.gif

Like I said before, they ain't winnin any black votes.

Of course as Tip O'Neil said "All politics are local". How many of the seats up for grabs in '06 are real contests? Time to google.

More than you think but, agreed, it isn't enough to make for a gigantic swing. Hopefully the good guys can win back a few, however. One race of interest is in Penn where there is a chance Santorum's sorry ass could be voted out. That would be a huge win - he defines the typical neocon asshole.

In his Senate office, on a shelf next to an autographed baseball, Sen. Rick Santorum keeps a framed photo of his son Gabriel Michael, the fourth of his seven children. Named for two archangels, Gabriel Michael was born prematurely, at 20 weeks, on Oct. 11, 1996, and lived two hours outside the womb.

Upon their son's death, Rick and Karen Santorum opted not to bring his body to a funeral home. Instead, they bundled him in a blanket and drove him to Karen's parents' home in Pittsburgh. There, they spent several hours kissing and cuddling Gabriel with his three siblings, ages 6, 4 and 1 1/2. They took photos, sang lullabies in his ear and held a private Mass. 9. Very good point. The hard right doesn't like to own up to the fact that the good majority of AMERICANS are AGAINST this war now and that includes a good portion of "their own."

the same "good majority" that reelected dubya? hahaha.gifmoon.gif

Take a look at a poll, asshat.

And....he won't be running any in 2008...so poll numbers are pretty useless at this point. The real test is if he still get his agenda across in the Congress and the Courts. Seeing that he is filling two vacancies on SCOTUS and most likely have the tax cuts made permanen, it really does not matter what his poll numbers are. frown.gif

  10. Actually has to do w/ Snowshoes from MSR but I am wondering if folks have run into other gear...

The Insider: White House notes Cascade woe

CHINESE SNOWSHOES DRAW ATTENTION: Last month, Cascade Designs Inc. filed a lawsuit against a Chinese company for allegedly producing snowshoes that are exact knockoffs of those made by the Seattle outdoor gear company at its factory in Sodo.

The case is now getting some attention from the Bush administration. Last week, Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez mentioned the woes of Cascade Designs in a speech on new initiatives to help fight intellectual property theft.

"Cascade is known for developing some of the most innovative outdoor gear in the world, with their snowshoes retailing at $130 a pair. The Chinese knockoff was being sold for $15," Gutierrez wrote in a printed copy of his remarks.

"Cascade has also reported pirates so bold that they attend trade shows to measure and snap digital photos of products they wish to copy. Our goal is clear -- this administration is committed to stopping trade in pirated and counterfeit goods."

Cascade Designs Vice President of Marketing Jeff Bowman said representatives of the Chinese company, United Industrial Ltd., have orally agreed to stop violating the snowshoe patents. But he added that the discussions have not progressed further.

"We sent them a document to formalize that agreement, but a signed copy has not yet been returned to us," Bowman said last week. "On Monday, I asked the Chinese about the status of them signing the document, and they responded that they were still reviewing it." tongue.gif
