  1. Actually I was several blocks away in Downtown LA from Camp OJ by the courthouse. I had taken a stroll over there the day before and saw the media encampment. F*cking unbelievable. There was a four tiered interview bleacher stand where a guest would basically walk across and then down the steps through about ten different news crews...

  2. Found this again whilst cleaning my office. Picked it up from a grandmother of an old gf. She originally claimed that they were selling these the year after JFK was killed in Dallas. There is a manufacture date of 1964 on the underneath. Nice Morbid pen holder for the desk, with snazzy Kennedy half-dollar holder. 122kennedy_assination.jpg

  3. Does anybody remember the old Eddie Bauer back in the days before many of you were born. They used to have climbing stuff. They went to clothes becuase they had better margins.

If REI wants to move to better margins and more turnover on product...then good for them. In the retail industry you have to have a good location, decent margins, good turnover, and low overhead. Otherwise you will go belly up...

rolleyes.gif Yeah, REI could be going belly-up any day now. Uh huh.

On a positive note, though, the catalog that came with this year's dividend featured La Sportiva Katanas, which is the first high performance climbing shoe REI has carried in years. Perhaps the sleeping giant is waking up?

Or acknowledging the explosive growth of climbing gyms.

    "Bouldering, its the new Yoga"

  4. "It's difficult to tell how much time passes when you're listening to a solo from the depths of Hades."

OK, this is not what I should be reading when its late on a Sunday night... The story is pretty gripping.

Much like an old H.P. Lovecraft story

  5. Know someone in the oil business in AK who was a petroleum engineer. One day they asked all the engineers to line up at their office and the managers walked down the line and asked people to sound off "one or two". "Ones" were let go. This guy was a "two".

    Does wonders for morale...

  6. Climb: Mt. Persis-West Ridge

    Date of Climb: 1/2/2005

    Trip Report:

Scottp and I with canine escort settled on this as a nice way to start the year. We were able to drive all the way to the trailhead for this climb, passenger cars will have no problem until the next dump of snow. Found the trail ( orange tape ) and began the steep ascent. This trail meant business...

Encountered snow about 3300' which made passing one of the lower Talus fields quite tough. Not enough snow to cover the field but enough to make the rocks slick as ice. Finally broke into thick snow ( 6" worth ) around 4200' and did some postholing about 500' from the summit. The views were absolutely stunning of Index, Baker, Shuksan, Glaicer, Rainier, and the Columbia tower in downtown Seattle ( I am not kidding ).

Ran into one other on the way down. Round trip from the car was about 5 hours with a couple of rest breaks and lunch at the summit.122IMG_2056-med.JPG

    Gear Notes:

    wagon, leash

    Approach Notes:

road is clear all the way to trailhead at 3000'
