  1. A map obtained by The Seattle Times appears to suggest that most major corridors in Washington would run along existing highways, such as Highway 2 across Stevens Pass, near where utility lines already cross the Cascades. Another corridor may run near an existing pipeline that borders the McNary refuge.
  2. The Methow! that place sucks. Its ugly and prone to horrible natural disasters like flooding, forest fires, and tornadoes. Not to mention, viscious bears and killer dinosaurs. Don't got there. Especially if you're from california or boulder.

No kidding, look what happened to the last mountaineer outing:

  3. I haven't been around cc.com much lately, but a really fun alpine sport climb is the Prime Rib of Goat on Goat Wall in Mazama. I'm prepared to be flamed and called an idiot and all the rest for suggesting it, but it is something our guests from Colorado might consider. Eliza, if you e-mail me (I don't read my PM's here) I could send you a copy of the topo. 11 pitches, 5.8'ish, gear list is 14 draws, easy day, wonderful setting.

I'll also second the suggestion of CA

The scenery is pretty nice , from what it looks like:

  4. Seattle has a very high % of private school utilization.

Seattle schools have a bad reputation and a history of consistently poor management.

100% of the families I knew living in Seattle & using the same day care as my kids either chose private schools or moved out of Seattle the summer before their first child started K.

Over half of the kids in North Seattle attend private schools. Of course the irony is that once the higher income/lower needs kids leave the public system, the per student costs increase as you contend with more immigrant ( ESL), special ED, 509s, and others...

  5. Climb: Three O'Clock Rock - Darrington-Silent Running

    Date of Climb: 5/21/2006

    Trip Report:

scottp and I hit the base of the route around 11am after the hike up the 8 mile creek trail. There is some significant treefall on the trail forcing some bushwhack to go around. The road to the trailhead was passable by all cars ( Camry at the TH). I started the first, snow abbreviated pitch, and we switched leads from there on out.

I got schooled on the 3rd pitch (5.9+) on the techniques of D-Town slab climbing, but I managed to get through it. We topped out at the 6th pitch, and I decided to push on to the bonus pitch, but ended up bailing with the weather turning and my flailing getting more frenzied. There is a missing bolt hanger halfway up this pitch.

scottp was grumbling about the button-head 1/4"ers on the 6th pitch, but the new bolts were well placed. Had a squall hit us on the rap down, but it blew through quickly giving us a chance to catch up on lunch before we headed back to the car.

Less than four hours from the base to the 6th belay and back down.

    Gear Notes:

brought 10 draws and a rack to 2.5"...

    Approach Notes:

    snow at base...

    trail has treefall.

  6. Got this catalog in the mail, thought it was land's end until I hit the tents page...REI? Huh, not one carabiner in site. They did have a hand powered espresso maker...

I heard at one time they did sell climbing gear, maybe they'll branch into housewares next

  7. Climb: Mt. Garfield-Infinite Bliss

    Date of Climb: 4/30/2006

    Trip Report:

Well, OlympicMtnBoy and I had a leisurely start to the day and rolled into the trailhead around 12. Found the trail and headed for the approach. Trail crossed the creek and then got steep, almost Mailbox Peak level of suffering. Finally broke out of the trees and onto the slab. We scouted around and finally found a set of anchors (actually the top of the first pitch) and headed up, swinging leads. The 1st four pitches quick, and in retrospect we should have simul-climbed.

The fifth pitch (sixth according to topo) had us go over the small head wall. Walking over to pitch seven ( our sixth) we started up again and reached another ledge system which had us walk over to the eight pitch and the beginning of the "Gully of Minor Annoyances". I led this pitch up and into the gully, after some runout up the gully finally found the third bolt and then a little higher placed a TCU. Probably didn't need it ( the gully is around 5.4) but made me feel a little better :-). The ninth pitch ( our eighth) had my partner come out the gully and onto a 5.9 face. Some water on the face made for a tricky traverse at one section, especially since as I followed I wanted to go over to the nice flake system on right.

The other party that was ahead of us was coming down by time we had topped out on this pitch and plus it was getting late in the day, so we decided to rap down from here.

Double rope raps down to the base where we ended up going to the right (facing the mtn) at around the top of the third pitch where we found another set of anchors not connected to any of the pitches. This proved to be good to dropping us off by our packs in the trees.

Time up from trailhead 45 minutes

Eight pitches 3 hours 15 minutes

Rapping down 1 hour 45 minutes

    Gear Notes:

    16 draws

single runners to extend the draws

    nuts,small cams

    Approach Notes:

    road is open and passable

  8. Please take a number! Our help staff are currently serving other clients. However, standing in line and waiting will get you up the climb faster than if you leave and come back later.

Pfft. Check out the Korean sites

Having over $6,000 in credit card debt is majorly fucked up.

According to the survey, 46.2% of all families now carry a credit card balance. This is up from 44.4% in 2001. Households are also carrying higher balances; the mean balance is now $5,100 ($4,400 in 2001) and the median balance is $2,200 ($2,000 in 2001). The median income is currently $43,200 and the typical family's credit card balance is now almost 5% of their annual income.

  10. I'm wondering what kind of fallout there will be from this Katrina warning video. How much more fucking incompetent can this imbecile be demonstrated to be? Here he is, caught in ANOTHER substantial lie related to an event with nationwide implications, and for some reason, no one is dragging him out on the White House lawn to be flogged.

    What a sham.

Nothing much will come of it. A substantial part of Dubya's base will say ( perhaps not in the open) that those people (folks in NO) deserved it and gov't isn't there to help...

And the folks who are thinking that there is going to be a wholesale change in November need to remember that all politics are local and only a handful of seats are actually in real contention...

    and that really sucks!

  11. i thought you only got dividends if you shopped there??

If you had the REI credit card then you would earn 1% on any kind of purchase through that.

ANother point is that $7 million of dividend went unclaimed...

  12. That's alot of "Life is Good" shirts!

Of course that billion dollar number is from sales income. I was going through the statements included with my dividend notice and was struck by the amount of cash on hand, which was about $135 million dollars. Of course there was related the expansion plans of several new stores and an eastern US DC, but still...is REI going to buy out EMS? I mean "Big Green Vest" isn't carrying any long term debt on their books...

  13. also is it a good idea to get a second rope off of ebay(even if it is not new) and carry my TR and that rope with the cleaner of the route... that way on our muntilpitch climbs we can repel 2 stations, making it faster.. yet adding a little weight... is it worth it? would you trust a rope to just repell off of from ebay? what would u do?

    thanks

Umm. I would never buy a rope 2nd hand, sight unseen. Actually that extends to any load bearing climbing gear. As for rope, a 60m x 10.5mm is a good workhorse coil and should last you a while.
