  5. Yeah, thought about it, but didn't have enough time...
  6. Went up there on July 19th and 20th. Conditions just in case anyones interested, sorry no photos: A lot of snow! They say melting is 5 and a half weeks behind! Some snow begins from about .3 - .5 miles past the lower meadows (snowfree campsites). Royal lake is not frozen over and there are some snowfree campsites. Past royal lake theres pretty much continual snow. Not many people have gone up there really. Routes on the surrounding peaks are pretty much in early season condition.
  7. Thanks! Im just curious because im thinking about the traverse from snoqualmie to red (or kendall).
  8. Does anyone know how much snow is up there (like around snoqualmie mountain, lundin peak, snow lake, that area)? Thanks
  9. Ok, that pretty much answers the question, thanks.
  10. I didnt' quite know where to put this post, so as it is a question about a route, whatever... Do you need glacier travel gear for this route or not?

im hoping, partly for the sake of your argument, pcg, that the picture mitochondria posted didn't happen to be the summit of that "Sweet Blue bomber ice" mount hood!

pcg, i guess what you mean is that mount hood is not a noob climb?

well, i guess i'm back to my first question: climbs to get experience on. "alex" seemed to think that hood in winter was a good idea, some people didn't. some seemed to think precise "education" with guides or mentor or such) was necessary before the attempt of other climbs, some seemed to think that if you have a strong will, you can do it. i've done scrambling... a fair amount, i have actually used a rope and some stoppers once on a particularly exposed portion of a scramble. The day before, I read about pro and ropes in "the freedom of the hills"; i don't think its rocket science (maybe im mistaken ) . No glacier experience, but in the mean time, ive taught myself how to tie and use prusiks. I have a pair of pretty old, flexible, strap on crampons, don't ask how i got them. I have an ice axe, which i have brought out on some snow shoeing trips (i actually got to use it for safety purposes on probably a 30 degree compact snow slope on Granite mountain. On that trip (I was with two other guys, one of them pretty experienced, other one pretty much beginner, i don't know if they're on CC). The more experienced one taught me some basic things about self arrest, i tried it, im not great at all, definitely could use practice. Voila! my climbing experience. I want to get into some harder stuff because i enjoy the thrill of exposure and it seems like it would be more fun.

As for hood: is there glacier travel? how are conditions in winter (aka "extremely cold" to "mild") and should I wear plastic boots? just ice axe and crampons, right? (and glacier stuff if needed0 North face of Vesper: never heard about that (not to say that i know a whole lot!), how difficult is the rock? (yds)

What jon h said about "having the coin", well, i guess that could be the hardest part. I could, if i REALLY wanted drop some money on a good service, which would help i'm pretty sure, but im not sure. I really started to get out because i just liked the whole idea of climbing and some of the challenges, and i guess i want to get some more out of it.

in terms of learning some skills for bigger trips/mountaineering do you think some of the courses offered by guiding/teaching services are a good way to go? I've looked at some online and some of them look really good, but they're all really expensive. Is going out with some more experienced people (i know a few) and learning and getting experience (basically how i started to like climbing) on harder climbs just as good or are they worth it?
