Interesting. However, my wife is out of town, and I'm stuck with the dogs. While I hike with them, I'm not sure how deep the snow will be and whether the old dogs can cope. Since it's a holiday weekend, it might be hard to find a spot in a kennel.
I'm going to be hiking up the Whitney trail on the 19th and 20th of September. Ordinarily, I'd take everything including the kitchen sink, but this time I have to go light.
Would a 32 degree bag be sufficient? How cold does it usually get up there in late September?
More info needed:
What boots were you wearing? Do you recommend plastic boots?
Any other clothing recommendations?
How far from the parking lot is the climber's bivy?
Did you wear your helmet all the way up?
I have a permit good for 8 people. So far I'm all by myself. I'm OK with that, but it is a terrible waste of those scarce permits. If you are interested in backpacking, scrambling and maybe a little fishing, let me know.
Don't forget to add some freeze-dried peas and corn.
BTW: The Garlic Mashed Potatoes they sell at Trader Joes is muy spicy and is very good. I tried the chicken and it worked out great. I think I'll try the turkey next.
