"Climbing to me is a battle with yourself, your own shortcomings, It's not a religion, but it's damn close to being spiritual. It's a search inside yourself, to see whether you measure up." - Dave Mahre

I saw Katie that afternoon just below the summit block chimney. As far as "she went out doing what she loved." You're right! It was an incredibly beautiful sunny day on 3FJ, one that climbers envision… sun on your face and endless peaks draped with blue. The following information came from an acquaintance in the Mazama group that was above Katie's climbing party. You may be aware of the situation at this point, but apparently the accident occurred just below the base of "The Crawl" possibly at a part of the trail commonly known as "Cliffhanger trail". Our climbing party was lower down the ridge of 3FJ at time of the accident. We were all unaware of the accident until we reached the trailhead. I hope I was helpful. My condolences to the family and friends. For further information on the accident you may also try contacting - Sisters Ranger District PO Box 248 Sisters, OR 97759 541-549-2111 Detroit Ranger District HC-73, Box 320 Mill City, OR 97360 503-854-3366

Good winter insulated jacket -- recommendations?
Snickers replied to crazybrit's topic in The Gear Critic
I've been contemplating the same issue and have compiled a quick inventory of jackets that I'm considering that may be of some help. I'm leaning towards the FF Helios or Volant jacket with the Mt. H. Phantom in close second. I'm a little unsure if I need baffled construction. I haven't considered 3D because of my experience with a shitty bag. The 3D tended to consolidate and create cold spots. This could be the result of a cheep bag! I'm not ruling 3D out that quick… I picked up the Mt. Hardwear Chugach pants and have only used them on a few outing… the verdict is still out. Nice pants not sure if they will keep my cold ass warm enough in the tough conditions. I tend to have ice in my bloodstream so I may lean for a heavier layer. After reading a few of these praise comments I may reconsider the down vs. 3D debate. The attached word doc. illustrates the pros.(green) and cons.(red). I hope this is helpful. 423177-DownJacket.doc -
God, that sucks a fatty! I feel your pain my wife's car got broken into two weeks ago (and it was in the buildings secured parking garage) but the crack smoken fools were so smashed they couldn't figure out how to get the radio out. So they just f-uped the dash with a knife and left their crack pipe. dumb shits p

Fellow CC'ers After many successful summit bids to the various volcano’s around the Puget Sound I have decided to make one of my particular ventures a little richer by supporting the 16th Annual American Lung Association® of Washington's (ALAW) Climb for Clean Air*. Just I case you are not familiar with Climb for Clean Air, it is a two day climb of the 14,410’ summit of Mt. Rainier in July of this year. I want to share an update on my '04 Climb for Clean Air. I’ve been busy these last few months with training and some fundraising efforts. It’s getting down to crunch time and I’ve been doing what I’m good at, that is hitting the trail but now it’s time to focus on the fundraising. I’ve taken care of the training end of things but I have been remiss on the fundraising side. To be frank, I'm pretty shy of my goal and need to put the pressure on. I have raised around $1,000 so far (which is not indicated on the website (www.alaw.org/decker)) and I need your support in raising the additional $2,500 (by June 11, 2004) donation required for participation in the Climb. Yes, that is correct only a few weeks away. Please express your support in one or more of the following ways: · Send a tax deductible* donation, made out to the American Lung Association® of Washington to: (Phillip Decker 126 3rd Ave N #204 Edmonds, WA 98020) Deadline: June 11, 2004 or visit my fundraising website at www.alaw.org/decker where you can make your secured credit donations! It is really quick and easy. · Check out my product fundraising website at http://www.cafeshops.com/climb4cleanair. It includes great t-shirts, mugs, hats, stickers, and various other items with some catch phrases and my own personal Climb for Clean Air logo. Oh yeah! Send the address to friends. Or · Listen up gear nerds, I will help you get rid of all those extra packs and disregarded gear you don't use anymore and in return you can buy someone else's. That's right I'm having a Climb for Clean Air Garage Sale! So check those overflowing garages that would like to get your car into someday and find out what you just can't bear to see laying around any more. When? - June 5th, 2004 (time and more info. to come) Where? - 8619 8th Ave NE Seattle, WA 98115 Please help me spread the word - Mention the Climb to 3 friends and ask if they'd be interested in sponsoring this worthy cause. More info on the Climb at www.alaw.org I thank you in advance for believing in this effort and in the important work of the American Lung Association® - Cheers, Phillip Decker a.k.a. snickers

Blah, blah, blah, blah! Doesn’t anyone work around here? Bug = Tough in purple Oh, I guess everyone is single or newly single from crapping all over this site. I guess I’m included in that now. You right bug, I have to keep clear of this site or I will find myself in the unemployment line and diligently typing away @ a singles chat room. Isn’t this a singles chat room? Hey, guys thanks for kicking those steps. It gave you something to work off all those carbs. If I remember correctly you guys are headed up the Tohoma Glacier this weekend? Big brother and I are headed down to JP’s house in P-town to go hit the Leuthold Couloir on Hood. From what I hear the snow conditions pretty much suck down there. We are hoping the sun this week will take care of that. Seriously, it was great to meet you guy’s! Crew – Snickers = York JPort seatosky = Big Brother

You can't look tough in purple!

Ah, yeah! I have used the 3/4 old school Ridge Rest (loved the oz's) for years and have always had trouble sleeping on it. So I picked up the lightweight (wide width -nice for the arms/shoulders-try it!) air mattress by Exped ($50 - Yeah not as thrifty as the Ridge Rest) and used it two weeks ago up on Muir with my full length Ridge Rest. I would have slept great if it weren’t for the howling wind. Yeah, I know I should have packed some earplugs. Anyways, the moral is I packed allot of pad and loved it but you could consider only the Exped Air on snow but I'm not sure how much insulation it would provide. I would save the $$$ and ditch the down. My climbing buddy picked up the standard w/out down and regrets not getting the wide. Go with the wide for only a few oz's (it even fits in a bivy)! Cheers,
