  1. i'm saying the foundation of the system is us; the consumer. don't get me wrong sc, i'm not trying to throw stones at anyone.

    scenario:

-resort-x is bad because they want to add lift lines, hotels, etc. folks get angry and cry out for a boycott and go to resort-y

-resort-y is somehow considered more ecologically responsible (or 'good', or worthy of your $$) because they aren't planning an expansion.

my point is; both resorts destroyed ecological functions and you can't point fingers at one and not the other because of the time of destruction. boycott none or boycott all!

I think the best method of protest is to counterfeit passes and distribute. 1. ride free, 2. meadows (...uuhh, i mean resort-x) records lower sales (which is the goal of a boycott), and 3. they expend more resources accomodating the renegade riders the_finger.gifthe_finger.gif

  2. cold temperatures decrease the pressure of the cannister, which decreases the temperature of the gas, which decreases the pressure of the cannister, which decreases the temperature of the gas, which decreases the pressure of the cannister, which decreases the...yeah yeah yeah

they used to make the cannisters a long and narrow shape that was perfect fit for a beer coozy and that helped. i can only find the short fat ones now.

next stove i get will be hand pressurized

  3. Seems since the FS doesn't generate a lot from timber sales anymore

FS timber sales have ALWAYS been a huge net loss.

I pay money for a fishing license, why wouldn't I have to pay for FS TH parking?

fishing license $$ go to the DFW. I have tried for years to find out where the Forest Pass funds go to no avail. are they going towards the trails and TH's I use? probably not. I'd have no problem paying if they did.

  4. there is absolutely no doubt who is the greatest political buffoon of our times. GW has surpassed Quayle by leaps and bounds.

how's this for a not unusual stupid quote...

"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we," George Bush told an audience of military brass and Pentagon chiefs. "They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we."

  5. 3 weeks seems to be just enough time for acclimitization on Cho Oyu...

    3000m-5200m, 7days, light exercise

    5200m Base camp, 7 days

    6200m A base camp, 4 cycles, 500mb w/o o2, 6days

    6700m camp II, 3 cycles, 4days

    7400m intermediate pt, 2cycles, 3days

    8201m tippy top, 1hr, o2

    (assuming decent Wx)

you may want to take a closer look at your timetable.

it is 3 weeks and 6 days

    tippy top??? rolleyes.gif

  6. so...since i'm in the minority i should keep my opinions to myself? i thought this was a discussion.

    swaterfall:

i completely agree that there are more pressing 'wilderness' detractors than the registers, however; 1. that is not the subject of this thread, and 2. one issue doesn't render the other moot

  7. Do you follow a trail on your "wilderness experiences"?

most often i don't. when i'm on a trail i do expect to see the usual crap along a trail like trash, cig butts, poop/tp, etc. and i do my best to collect and remove that trash (except for the poop).

If you go about removing registers at least save them, don't chuck.

where would you like me to send them?

edit: good idea AF, i'll send them to the mountaineers, COD

  8. I believe that registers are trash and am surprised to see so many contrary opinions.

The only benefit of a register (that I have heard so far) is inspiring newbie climbers by reading entrys and making their own. Otherwise, the 'first ascent', 'a historical record' for proof, and 'it's a tradition' reasons are solely to stroke your ego. Who the fuck cares if you have FA, or have a record from 3 years ago so you can prove that you summited.

Get a little tired of folks in the back country not wanting anything or anyone to intrude on "their" view of what the wilderness is supposed to be

wilderness areas are set aside for visitors looking for a wild experience. encountering motorized vehicles, large parties, and trash all detract from the definition of 'wild'...which is why they're banned. Leaving trash behind is also illegal and unethical.

Registers also take away from the experience I consider 'wild'.

Does NOT having a register take away from your wilderness experience?

Larry the Tool & AlpineFox, let me know if you want another garbage hauler on your next cleaning expedition.

  9. Patricia Lewis (grade 8) did an experiment to see if life can evolve from non-life. Patricia placed all the non-living ingredients of life - carbon (a charcoal briquet), purified water, and assorted minerals (a multi-vitamin) - into a sealed glass jar. The jar was left undisturbed, being exposed only to sunlight, for three weeks. (Patricia also prayed to God not to do anything miraculous during the course of the experiment, so as not to disqualify the findings.) No life evolved. This shows that life cannot come from non-life through natural processes.

I'm tired of this christian right-wing directed 'scientific' research. She purposely left out the electricity!?!?!! If only she added electricity to the charcoal and vitamins...who know's what crazy organism she could have given life to!!

unless i'm missing something, that site only describes forces required to pull the weight. i didn't see anything about forces of the weight and hauling the weight against the anchor/s.

not saying you're wrong, just still not convinced.
