on 3/8: zero snow up to morrison creek cg. mostly clear up to cold springs cg - but had to punch through some deeper heavily rutted sections (<1.5 feet) the last 1/2km. arrived in suby impreza very early. 4 wheel drive trucks had similar issues later in afternoon.

111, thank you for your enlightening commentary. we'd all live better lives if you would provide more of your insightful 2nd hand advice. * seoul is not korea! anyone who spends time in seoul and claims to experience another culture is fooling themselves. i like going to seoul for two reasons only (food and microbrew) and i'm sick of it by the end of the weekend, so i can understand how your friends didn't enjoy their time. * there are over a million english teachers in korea so there is bound to be a share of disgruntled foreigners * my post had nothing to do with living in a big city much less teaching english * life experience (no matter where you are) is what you make of it. * the land of morning calm is (i think) more accurately described as the land of contradictions. since confucianism is deeply embedded into this culture, you really have to know the situation and not the person to get an idea of how people will behave. there are times i'm at my wits end and i want to give someone a good shaking, but way more often i'll be overwhelmed by their generosity. once while bailing on a climbing trip i walked a 1/2 mile in the rain and came across a group of elders under a canopy. i approached them to call a taxi for me, but instead they fired up the grill, cooked up a meal, and kept my cup full of soju for 2 hours. some of the nicest people i've ever met, even if we could only communicate through charades. anyway, you are far more likely to experience this kind of sincerity out in the countryside. toko, you'd be amazed at how much has changed in the last 20 years! seoul is still congested and polluted (and currently full of exciting riots!!). the infrastructure has really improved so you can get anywhere in the country in a few hours. yeah, the humidity is starting to get bad and soon the rains will come...i'm just holding out for the fall. oh yeah...position is filled

try Tom Dwyer in Sellwood. they may not be the cheapest, but i trust them 100% to tell me exactly what is wrong, what i have to fix, and what i can let slide. they took the time to answer all my gumby auto questions without treating me like an idiot.

hey all, a friend of mine in seoul posted this and i thought some of you folks could help out with some of her questions. any ideas for her? much appreciated... -rick

aahhh...you're familiar with our fine brews. don't forget the OB! when you go that low, they all taste the same. say luke, with all the stories about yak bouldering, i may have to head up there sometime! with 75% "mountaineous" countryside, there is a lot of rock to be had. i wasn't really into rock until i came here last summer so i'm not all that good. i spent most of fall with an experienced friend (who's still recovering from an injury) documenting new sites in english, learning, getting frustrated, and getting hooked. there is also ice, but not as much and too far away from me. although, you're sure to find me here during the sticky hot summer days (check out the video). pics of climbing in jejudo (the 'hawaii' of korea) Deodunsan pics

my current mission is to convince Kim Jong-Il to sing "i'm so ronery" live at the superbowl halftime show. wish me luck! seriously, engineer contract with the AF. the funny thing is that i was never really interested in rock until i left portland and came here. without the year round snow i had to find something to keep me entertained.

either that or my mini me

i got it too... and i thought i was special!
