  1. Justen is making his way down to BCGEAR in Eugene on Saturday, September 29th. He'll be sharing slides and stories of some of his recent spectacular free climbs, including his FA of PreMuir on El Cap this summer. The show is free and we'll have two local kegs, refreshments, and some food. We'll also be selling BD C3s and Beal 9.4mm Stingers for 30% off on the night of the show. Doors open 6pm. Justen starts at 7:30. This was a popular show at FF in Seattle. Don't miss it.

  7. Ryland - Turns out the climber is J.B. Tribout, not Watts. And I'm not certain of the exact content of the flick. It's my impression that the East Face is not a part of the film, but I'll have to see it myself to comment. Sorry Eugene's so far from pdx. Mike S
  8. Hey Western Oregon climbers! On Saturday December 9th, Backcountry Gear will be hosting long-time Smith local Mike Volk's video presentation of his documentary "Smith Rock 1986: The Birth of U.S. Sport Climbing." Witness the explosion of Sport Climbing at Smith Rock in the mid 1980s. Powerful and influential climbers of the time climb some of the Park's most famous routes, clad in bad lycra and super-sick mullets. Volk has documented this radical evolution in sport climbing over the last couple decades. The 45 minute Smith Rock 1986 features climbers Alan Watts, J.B. Tribout, Todd Skinner, Beth Wald and many others. A couple clips from Josh Lowell's Dosage IV will follow. The movie will be presented here in our new retail space (on a bigger screen this time.) Admission is free, as well as the BEER, WINE, Non-A Drinks, and FOOD. Come on down! The show will start at 7:30. Get here early for a seat, and while the IPA on tap is still pouring. Our new address is 1855 W 2nd Ave IN EUGENE. See you there!
  9. Thanks to all you who came down for the party last night. We weren't expecting a standing-room only crowd! I hope you all enjoyed the show, food and drink. We have one more raffle drawing next Saturday, so come on down anytime this week and enter, AND enjoy the 20% storewide savings through 11/18! Thanks again Western Oregon Climbers! Mike S
  10. Hi Folks! On Saturday November 11th, Backcountry Gear will be hosting Roger Strong's presentation of his FA on Kichatna Spire last year in Alaska. His new route the Voice of Unreason (ED2 M7 A1 WI5, 700m) was climbed in a 25 hour round-trip push with fellow climbers Rob Owens and Sean Isaac. Their route follows a thinly iced chimney system with many pitches of M6 and M7, leading to a 1000 ft ribbon of blue ice. Roger is always entertaining and we're psyched to be able to host him down here in Eugene. Roger will be presenting here in our new retail space. Admission is free, as well as the BEER, WINE, Non-A Drinks, and FOOD. We'll have a free raffle as well, giving away at least a new Beal rope and a Mountain Hardwear sleeping bag. Did I mention FREE BEER (assuming you're of age)??? Come on down! Roger will start at 7:30. Get here early for a seat. Our new address is 1855 W 2nd Ave.
  11. Greetings all. Our Eugene shop is finally reopening on 10/23 after being closed down since last November. Please note our new address: 1855 W 2nd Ave! We're between Chambers and Garfield on 2nd. We'll finally have legit retail hours, Monday-Saturday 10-7, and more climbing gear than most shops on the West Coast. Oh yea, we're hiring for the retail store as well (Part Time). Shoot me an email if you're interested. Thanks. south@backcountrygear.com
  12. Taking cues from the FF posting, we at BCGear figured this was a decent forum in which to post a hiring ad. We are a growing Eugene-based gear shop in our 10th year of business, focusing on high-end climbing and backpacking gear, with most of our sales generated from our website, www.backcountrygear.com We are gear junkies who love to get out and play. We have an opening in our International Sales/C.S. department. Position involves daily email/phone contact with international customers, verifying payment details, shipping methods, answering product questions, and fraud prevention. The position also monitors and responds to many of the email inquiries received by the shop, and could possibly include a few hours of retail sales floor work when our shop reopens next month. It demands a strong familiarity with outdoor gear and its intended use. Climbing, backpacking, and general outdoor experience a must! Retail experience, comfort on the phone and with computers, and ability to type without hunting and pecking is very helpful. Position is available now, and is Monday-Friday 8:30-5:30. Vacation, cheap gear, and cool coworkers are current perks. Email south@backcountrygear.com or call 800-953-5499 ex 203.
