Hey PP, You are mixing apples and oranges here. Your study talks about wage and purchasing inequality between the top 10 and the bottom 90%. This is a relative measure. And there is no doubt that since the 70% this inequality has increased. The real income Krugman talks about is an absolute measure. He indicates that the CBO study says real income has fallen. Not inconsistat at all. In fact if you look at Figure XI on page 33 of your link you will see that it agrees perfectly with the CBO statment. Average wages have changed little if at all (I assume this is inflation adjusted) as shown by the flat line at the bottom of the graph labeled "Average wages". Since the Top 10% is factored into this number it may be that the Median wages have fallen. Though the graph neither supports of negates this fact.

This is getting old. Over the last 20 years the wealth of the rich has grown faster than thier taxes. I will not try to defend that with statistics because there are so many statistics that we cannot see the forest for the trees. Yes the rich pay a huge proportion of the total tax bill. Is that fair? I don't know. Is life fair? No. Can the rich afford to pay more? Yes. I say let them pay more. They benefit from it more than most others do too.

OK, the road was blocked about 2 miles from the parking lot. But melting fast. It may be clear by the weekend. The route is in prime shape. We didn't bother roping up. Things were melting out fast though. Nothing seemed to be opening up yet. We skied off the railroad grade and all of us let off little sluff avalanches. As few freeze thaw cycles and the wet snoe should turn to prime corn.

Did you attend Hogwarts with Harry Potter?

The last I heard (which was second or third hand) was that they couldn't find it!

Did most of the Easton this weekend. On Saturday 2 snowmobilers rode up to us and asked if we had seen anyone with a matching snowmachine. Appearantly, someone drove into a cravasse above 9000'. They fell 100' (or so I am told) and are alive but beaten up. The sled is gone! Anyone know anything else?

I think its great that she testifyed. Why only for 2 hours? Unfortunately now others won't have to. This administration is paranoid and attempts to hide ANY information from public view it can. I don't think most reasonable people could have expected the Bush administration to have known what would unfold on 9/11. I for one loathe the man but do not fault him for 9/11. Why won't he then testify. I think it would have helped him in the polls. Instead we got a media feeding frenzy and Condie comes out smelling bad.

What is it about dubya and cheney that they send a woman to testfy for them. Cowards. Give Condie a break. She is just a scapegoat here.

This is an interesting question. Is Iraq a better place? What is freedom worth to THEM? I do not claim to know the answer. Perhaps its fair to say 1000 deaths is worth the price of freedom and democracy. 10000 deaths? 10 years of occupation? how about 100000 deaths? Perhaps a 5 year civil war that break the country into 3 parts? At what point do we say it wasn't worth it? Is this a valid question to those that support the was and its democratizing ideas? I think it should be. What if we nuke the place and re-poputate it with former Irqai nationals currently living in the US? Is this price too high to pay for freedom?

camping above "traditional" high camps on Rainier
Loose_Brie replied to mountaineer38's topic in Newbies
From my experience most of the problems on Rainer are weather related. If you are truely interested in summiting I would be prepared to wait. I for one would not want to be exposed at 12K+ when a storm comes in. Muir is bad enough, but higer and you will likely have issues. If you have the time plan for 4-5 days. And by plan I mean bring fuel and food. Climb to Muir the first day. Drink lots and see how you are feeling. Get up early (most likely won't have a choice there). Is there a strong wind? Clouds? Do you feel sick? If so go back to bed, and get up at 7:00 and re-evaluate. If the weather has cleared go for Ingerham. The point is, be relaxed and flexible about it. If you have good weather and feel strong, push on for the summit. If not hunkerdown and acclimitize. Don't miss a weather window just to stay on scheule, likewise, don't push on if the conditions are not right. If you have the time and are flexible you will be both safer and more likely to summit. -
What pressure inside the plane is equivalent to pressure in terms of elevation? I wouldn't think going from sea level to 6k would be that bad cause the plane's pressure is gonna be less than at sea level by a decent amount in the first place. On a flight to the mid west my altimeter watch read around 7200 feet.

You better hope so, since that will keep you safely insulated behind your monitor where you belong. Good lord, when I agree with Greg W there has got to be somehting wrong. Forget your meds this week Dolittle?

Hey Doolittle, I'm no conservative, but you are full of crap. Fuel prices are fairly elastic. It will not take much in the way of changed behavior to stem the tide of rising fuel costs. And yes people do change thier behavior. The fact is we WILL be using more fuel efficient vehicles by July. I'm going climbing this weekend. The car will have 4 people rather than 2. I rode my motorcycle today, much better milage. My bicycle is tuned up. There are busses. Carpooling is an option. The point is even small changes can make a huge difference in a short period of time. $3.00 a gallon? Bring it on. I think its great how the oil companies have taken it upon themselves to raise taxes on us since BushCo doesn't have the stomach. Oh and it helps solve the traffic congestion too.

How about we make the entire midle east irrelevant by getting off thier oil?
