  1. I was in the Coulee on Saturday and didn't see or hear any dirt bikes, however the lock has been cut off the gate, and there are car or truck tracks behind the gate. I have a pic of that if anyone needs evidence to share with land managers or the sheriff.

  2. Pope, really, that's not the issue at hand here. I personally do not support the existence of IB for a number of reasons, but feel no need to be all indignant about its existence. BTW the land managers were considerably more concerned about the trail than about the route.

Still, it's about the dirt bikes at Vantage. Yes, there are climbers out there breaking laws and regs as well, but don't assume every climber is, or supports the lawlessness.

  3. Obviously they shouldn't be riding their bikes where it's prohibited. But I think the heart of this thread is really that WE are just irritated that their noise infringes on what should be a peaceful outdoor experience. They could be policed into an area that they are allowed to ride on and still piss us off because of the noise. Learn the refuge boundaries, store the phone numbers in your cell, report land use violations when you witness them. Or, if they are on public land and within their rights - smile, deal with the noise or bolt somewhere... I mean climb somewhere else. :)

But the bikes being discussed in this thread ARE riding in an are off-limits to bikes. It's not ABOUT whether or not it's annoying to others--it's illegal.

  4. Hear, hear. The issue here is the bikes in the Coulee, nothing else.

The issue is treading lightly in the wilderness. If you participate in the destruction of our rock resources, then you don't have a moral leg to stand on. It's puzzling how one even hears the kid on the bike above the chorus of bolt-clippers yelling "Take!" and "Send it!" Not to mention the harmonic gurgling of the community bong against the percussive clatter of the Hilte.

Sounds to me like your issue should be directed at the land managers if you want a bolting ban in the area.

  5. Riding motorcycles in a wildlife refuge is not a gray area. It is absolutely, irrefutably, and simply, illegal and destructive to habitat. And we as climbers can choose, if we wish, to take responsiblity to protect the area in which we climb.

Hear, hear. The issue here is the bikes in the Coulee, nothing else.

  6. Meanwhile, the county's unionized employees receive annual cost-of-living salary adjustments and the expense of their county-supported health insurance is increasing faster than revenue. Energy costs, too, are soaring.

The unions have contracts and health costs are going up for everyone.

    What's your point?

  7. I think Rod's older songs are great(not the new "Downtown Train" crap) like Maggie May, You're in My Heart, etc. Then again, I have bad taste so I guess that's not saying much.

Tom Waits wrote "Downtown Train". I'm not going to argue with you about Rod Stewart being lame, but not based on that song, girl.

    Tom Waits rooklz!

  8. So, are the streams they are taking the fish samples from reintroduced with fish? Would one of the Trailblazers know?

I don't know the exact origin of the exact fish they took samples from, but I can tell you that the fish in our high lakes are either stocked or the descendants of stocked fish. The high lakes here didn't originally have fish in them.

As I mentioned upthread, they have found heavy metals in high concentrations in fish in the Hagen/Bacon/Blum area. There was a Draft EIS written a few years ago about whether or not to continue stocking in the Park (it is a pretty rare thing in the NPs at this point in time) and the information was in the EIS. BTW that decision has still not been issued by the Park. I believe that stocking is expected to continue in the few lakes in the NCNP until that decision is handed down.Right now the process is stalled due to a piece of legislation that the DEIS asks for to enable the continuation of stocking. Three possible outcomes I see on that: the legislation passes and limited stocking is premitted to continue, the legislation stays in limbo indefinietly and stocking continues, the Park makes a decision without the legislation. I don't think anyone really knows what the outcome will be.

Fair question, I might add, Kat, but I'm wondering what difference it makes? The fact that the fish hold these toxins does not bode well for the overall ecological health of the affected areas, the fish are just an effective way to see it.

  9. I would consider the holding of prisoners at Gitmo without due process forcible, and aspects of the Patriot Act are designed to suppress opposition and crisism. Ditto on the so-called "free speech zones" that are created to keep critical voices away from events that President is at. There,we have fascism covered.

I don't think most Dems are opposed to universal health care of some sort, and that is a socialistic program. Nothing real scary about that IMO.
