Looking for thoughts on a parka purchase.
Pro Mountain Sports replied to Theodore's topic in The Gear Critic
Interesting discussion here. While I believe the synthetic insulation has a place, like Tvash I've also found I prefer down most of the time for my own outdoor activities. It's way too easy to buy into the hype, and there is no shortage of hype, and a ton of BS as well. A new miracle fabric every year. I've tried many of these miracle fabrics, and they never do what they claim. The greater the hype, the poorer the performance and value. Waterproof/Breathable is a great example. 30 years ago Gore added urethane to protect from “contamination” that was causing their membrane to leak, which of course reduced the breathability. The sales pitch at the time was improved breathability. Every few years they “improve” their product with a new marketing campaign. Improved breathability is always the claim, and not just improved but greatly improved. Their competitors are spending money like crazy to hype their way into this lucrative market. No surprise that incredible breathabitlity is the claim. The “testers” take out the brand new products, take a few laps, write reviews, and feed the hype. In my experience miracle fabrics are a hoax. The more I try stuff, more often I am impressed with the least hyped stuff. -

Thanks a bunch everyone for your comments. We've been looking at them with different boots. While it looks like they will fit a wide range of boots and sizes, we're disappointed they won't fit everything well. Small boots may have some issues, but hard to evaluate without climbing in them. Dane, any chance you could make an add-on piece that would attach to the Grivel Linking Bar so that you could use a Grivel Rear with a Petzl Front? Certainly a crazy idea. and Mike, Like Dane (excepting Wayne) you are fast approaching the advanced age where you will surely need the latest tricky gear. -

New Crampon from Petzl

What is so intriguing about the Lynx isn't so much the dual/mono (while it is a nice thing to have) points from our POV. It is more the ability to use the crampon on a wide range of boots. You are getting two crampons without spending twice as much. Do you have Trango S and a pair of Nepals? Do you like a slim and trim 'Fruit-Boot' for ice and a larger boot for snow slogs? The Petzl Lynx has you covered. And they are in stock! Come on by with you boots and check them out. -
We will get a shipment of the new Petzl Lynx this coming Thursday 9/22/11. This crampon has changed the game. You get the best of all worlds. Mono, Dual, Universal toe, Step-in. Come on by and check it out. Supplies will be limited. Have a look at the Lynx in action in this

We put together a very detailed list of ropes and their weights. There is quite a bit of variation in what a manufacturer is allowed to call their ropes in diameter the UIAA allows for up to a .5mm either on either side. So, a rope maker could sell a 10mm as a 9.5 or a 10.5. Therefore we have decided that the best way to judge ropes equally is by their grams per meter. It makes for a level playing field. You can take a look at this chart Pro Mountain Sports Rope Chart We stock a pretty wide selection of ropes and have the Monster 7.8 in stock.

Rope length question - when is 60 m. "too long"?
Pro Mountain Sports replied to Jud's topic in Newbies
PMS is still stocking the 50m lengths, both single and half ropes. They are getting harder to find, but we still have them for now anyway. We also have some nice 70m ropes, that you can cut to make two shorter ropes. Make one 30m and one 40m, or two 35m. -
HB Offsets are back. Available now at PMS and other fine outdoor shops in your area.

Gary, did you cut yours or did we short you? We have two Evazote Pads folks EV50 5/16" x 20" x 60" $25 EV50 1/2" x 20" x 80" $35
