Congratulations, you guys, it looks like you've managed to argue about Pub Club in the high style of the Warshington crew on this one!

Broken Ankles...exercises while I wait??

The welfare universal system up here told me to walk on it based on the results of an X-Ray, which only compounded hairline fractures, necessitating surgery to remove unattached talar bits. Yes, they would have done a CT on the talus when Stef got the second opinion he promised me he was going to get. You did that, right, old boy? Remember what I told you yesterday about me being non-weight-bearing for ten weeks after the subtalar fusion I'm having next spring? I seriously doubt you want to go through that! -
Actually get the T-nuts started with a light tap of hammer, and then tighten them with a bolt (from the other side) and a ratchet. T-nuts are handy, but they kind of suck.

No, I was there last night, sort of....

So Goat, by your logic, then, should everyone pay for their kids' education? Seems to me that you would suggest relieving the tax burden for childless people like myself with regard to education. 50 words or less, please. I went to public school, and my reading comprehension is, well, you know!

OK, fair enough. You make a fair argument for the poor and their leisure time. Poor people don't have a lot of leisure time, unless they are lazy poor people, oh wait, never mind.... This leads me to a question: are there any voucher programs that only make vouchers available to people unable to afford to send their kids to private school? I don't think it would sway me to the other side of the voucher argument, but I think a lot of people look at vouchers as a kind of welfare program for the rich, and might consider it a valid idea in this context. On a completely different topic about wanting the government to hand out money, is there a program that provides $ to people who can't work due to non-L and I disability? I'm looking at being unable to work in my trade for about three months, and am not sure if I'll be able to land another job while I'm recovering. The financial hit could be pretty devastating if no job or other assistance is available....

Oh no, did Greg's 'fuck the poor' thing go global on us? I could have sworn poor people had the same rights as citizens to stand up for the needs of the electorate as rich people....ESPECIALLY AT THE LOCAL LEVEL. Did I miss something? In any case, hell is going to freeze over before I support paying for other people to send their kids to private school.

Actually my grasp of politics is superior to yours because I've been serving almost non-stop in elected positions since I was party chair of the McGovern committee in my first grade class. For the record, it wasn't my best moment for service and leadership, we lost 7-14 to the Nixon camp, though it may have been along the party lines of the parents!

It's not a monorail extension. It's a whole new system. My understanding is the old Alweg 'rail won't be part of it. I wouldn't put money on the city rebuilding the Viaduct without outside help. Anyway you all need that to get to the ballparks that happen to be here that we didn't want or vote for. So when my Mom is in town, we'll ride the Momorail, but what about Dad?

Seattle residents aren't really that taxaphobic, FW. That latest Eyman initiative didn't pass here, for example.

I have seen a lot of orthopedic surgeons, and I've come to the conclusion that Charm School is an elective rather than a required course in their studies.
-
Judging on his qualifications and his record, he is arguably the best in town.....but man, he made me CRY! Guess I won't be inviting him to my next cocktail party....
-
Saw my new surgeon. How come good orthopedic surgeons are such jerkyfaces?

If you walk in and don't see any of the usual suspects, go downstairs!

mwills, that is kind, their brand line stuff is well made, but no PataGucci, worth the $$ and great warranty service. Good stuff though, and Made in Canada.

IG and I have been doing our part to keep D and H in bidness lately, and I think the place has everything we want in a Pub Club establishment. If I'm not mistaken they even have "hard liquor", which is best held, well, by the ears.

Thanks to all for providing me yet another evening of entertaining reading, after another long day at work, to pay for my upcoming obscene copay on surgery "out of network" (yes my ankle is going to go to "private school", aka getting worked on by a non-HMO doc, for an hour next month), and lost time. A few remarks: Excellent commentary from Chuck and Jonathon, you guys did a great job of saying it like I can't sometimes. Chuck, I'm childless and will likely stay that way, but if your kids want to go to public skool, I'm glad to pay for it. I'd even pay for their higher education, or at least a good part of it, especially if their academics are on the high end. A buddy of mine is in her first Q at the UW and told me what tuition runs these days, and it absolutely floors me that the taxpayers aren't picking up more of the tab. I'm fine assuming that tax burden, but am ABSOLUTELY not paying for anyone to go to private school who is not related to me. Your choice, your dime. If you don't like the public schoools, use your power as a citizen to make it better, or pay for private school. Yaya, I knew it was you. Babe, you are so unmistakeable. FS, please stay in school. Don't forget to take some Poli Sci and Econ, and maybe a little English 99 wouldn't hurt either. [ 11-19-2002, 12:36 AM: Message edited by: allison ]

I know this is a dumb, dumb topic, but thanks to one and all for your help.

Vouchers encourage people to go outside of the public school sytem. If people are involved in their schools, as in their communities, it makes them better and keeps them better-funded among other things, making them a more valuable asset to all.

Here are a few of mine: Yes: k-12 and higher education (public only, no vouchers) national parks, forests, wildernesses, etc universal health care day care breaking up monopolistic businesses trade tariffs libraries and museums No: stimulating the economy through war or other military action getting in the middle of labor disputes through Excecutive Order liquor stores faith-based anything

Ok, all this talk of taxation leads me to another question: In a perfect world, what services should the governments (from local to federal and all in between) of our great nation provide?
-
All I'm really hearing here is "I don't want to pay taxes". Well, I don't want to either, nor do I want to have to take the garbage out, change the oil on my car, pay bills, and a lot of other necessary tasks in life. Sorry! How about some solutions? I wish I had some I could throw out there, but I don't.

Sure, I was there. Congrats on bagging the Highest 100 in Washington!
