Shit, that is REALLY scary. Remember that we in WA never thought Eyman's bills would pass either and we we are fiscally fucked with capital F. You can read Oregons SB742 in pdf format at:

Scary, Scary snowpack. Some friends of mine were up heli skiing in BC last week and had some descriptions of some pretty good sized slides that were, for that particular slope, probably 100 year slides on the basis of the runout and probable age of groups of trees they took out. With all of the alternation this season between cold and clear to heavy dumps and the like, it is just a difficult snowpack since many of the layers are deep. A reminder that we are constantly mitigating risk, not removing it. A for those who passed on and those who knew them.

I just cracked "the last full measure" by Shaara. Just finished the first 10 chapters of Atkin's Physical Chemistry . Any of you read Wolfram's
A new kind of science ? I'm a few hundred pages in and wondering if it's worth the other 600.

So, what do you guys think of the personality types they put forward? Apparently, I'm a 'Visual Mathemetician". I guess that's another way of saying "Likes the pretty pictures in the math books"

So, a guy goes into a store and sees a display advertising "100% smarter" pills next to the cash register. Curious and eager to be smarter, he purchases the pills. As soon as he steps onto the sidewalk, he pops the recommended two pills, chews and swallows. He instantly realizes that they look and taste just like rabbit pellets. Enraged that he's been had, he races back into the store to confront the shopkeeper. "You just sold me rabbit pellets labelled as '100% smarter' pills!" he exclaims. "See, now you're already 100% smarter," replies the shopkeeper.

Let's find out.Step One: Take an IQ test (flawed and wrong as they may be). IQ test. Step Two: Anonymously respond to poll.
My IQ is:<8586-100101-115116-130131-140>141.
Step Three: realize that the poll is skewed and probably even more wrong than the test. -
There was a pretty good show on Frontline (for those of us who watch Public TV) on the evolution of the Iraq situation. It was titled "The war behind closed doors," and documented the way in which the current administration shifted from 9/11 to a war on Iraq. An interesting view regardless of if you are pro-/neutral-/anti-war. It can be watched online at:
"FRONTLINE: The war behind closed doors."

Should this thread get an award for most sustained posting at an average of 14 posts an hour for 10 hours?
One thing is clear: there is a buttload of misinformation coming out from both pro and anti-war sides of the argument. It is fair to say that there is more to it than the uber-simplistic terms bush is talking in and less to it than the "hellbent on greed" the anti-bushes are proclaiming.
A quote I heard a while ago that is worth remembering, "Americans are not hated for their values, but rather their departures from them."
Take it as you will and form your own opinions. Being a critical reader, even of what you want to hear, is part of not being a Sheep.
That being said, I do believe it is time for a
Oh yeah, and don't confuse support of troops with support of war. Nuff said.

Brought to you by the same people who tried to block VHS because they thought it would be bad for business. Iguess they were wrong on that one too. WHy don't they have enough foresight to be able to see how to take advantage of the situation? The internet was an opportunity for them, but they are choosing to see it as a bad thing. But the music industry (excepting some of the smaller labels) is not that kind to its patrons, or it's musicians for that matter. On the other hand, it is still copyright infringement. The real question here is whether or not the invasion of privacy and pre-assumption of guilt are worth the enforcement of copyright law.

I've heard of people sucking on the sweat-soaked pads from their bike helmets to replenish electrolytes during long rides (gatorade seems easier to stomach to me), but this is a whole different level. "No, thanks"

I think that it is fair to say that there is a fair amount of discretion and judgement involved in Moderating. As long as it is fair and consistent, it is hard to really have a problem. At a certain level, the amount of moderation will seem to be too much or too little to someone (or someone's avatar).
Whether or not the Rainier Record thread was moderated well is a judgement call. There is a time and a place for spray. If you think Dan Larson is fos, then say so and leave it at that- unless it is in the Spray section, then pull out the firehoses and go to it. If you are interested in the thread - which would include questioning it in this case- then the spray is a pain in the ass and is out of place.
Kudos to snoboy for trying to get the ground rules for the freshiezone set up beforehand.

As always, if you want to write to your representative, it is quick and easy to do so online. They do actually read these and reply. (See the Cantwell on Fee Demo thread).

Remeber that Bruce Willis flick 'Unbreakable' ? Where's Mr. Glass?
If the story is true, I'm certainly glad that that was the outcome. There has been enough tragedy in the mountains this season already.

And since it's St P's day, it seems relevant to bring beer into this.

Oh, the horror!
Havn't taught this stuff since santa cruz days...

Maybe they've been talking to the boys down at JPL and had a little trouble with the metric to english unit conversion...

IS it Monday?
Why yes, yes it is.
As for St P's day, try giving a burly 3 hour practical mineralogy final until 9:45pm on st. patrick's day. To compensate, I went out afterwards and got trashed with some of my students. Heck, even needed it after that. Who schedules finals, anyways?

Perhaps it should be amended that we, the people, have the right to legislate a sentiment. I mean, how different is that than changing French Fries to Freedom Fries?

Lambone, would you be referring to the phenomena known as "Aiding on Rainier"?

New proposed Oregon protester law

So, what if the NRA had a rally to support gun legislation? By this law, they could just as easily be branded as 'terrorists' and jailed for a minimum of 25 years without possibility of parole. In fact, the increased possibility of the presence of guns at that hypothetical rally could be used to justify more severe repression methods. The labelling of persons practicing civil disobedience as anarchists is just simply wrong. Civil anarchy is an oxymoron. There are already laws about blocking traffic, grafitti, and 'anarchism'. Why give the government extra leverage against its citizenry? I mean, really, why?
