We have a Light Wing adze. It comes with the removable yellow pinky rest and also a leash I believe. Can ship to PDX and you pay no sales tax. Give a ring if you want it 206 292 2210.

Blake, we are at a loss to explain the recent market fascination with snazzy lightweight down jackets such as these. We here at FF have been carrying them in the retail store for a few years. Last year we sold out of the women's version in no time, the men's version took a little longer. Also popular these days are the Mont Bell UL Inner Down Jackets, which are about as light, but not quite as sexy at the Patagonias. I agree with your observation that for a minimal marginal weight increase (adding more down) your return of a substantially warmer jacket is well worth it. Our own Hyperion Jacket, made with Schoeller NanoSphere fabric, weighs a scant 11 ounces AND has way more water resistance than either the Mont Bell or the Patagonia jackets. Not to mention the warmer, more water resistant FF jacket costs exactly the same as the Asian made Patagonia... I can't explain that one either. We must not be charging enough. Still, there seems to be some inexplicable perception that a less lofty jacket is somehow going to be a superior choice. Some people just don't want a jacket as warm as our Hyperion. When you enter the realm of rationalizing about 1 or 2 ounces in a $200 down jacket, you need to look at yourself in the mirror (or on the scale) and ask how much weight you can lose for free. Other than the seemingly endless obsession over weight savings, fashion preference and warmth preference are the only other explanations I can offer for the popularity of these jackets. This relates to the circular hypothetical syllogism that 1. If you're looking good, you're feeling good 2. If you're feeling good, you're climbing good 3. If you're climbing good, you're looking good In response ScottP's comment about the Patagonia's fabric being abrasion resistant, I beg to differ. Since when was 22 denier fabric abrasion resistant? Resistant, perhaps, to abrasion against a fluffy bunny rabbit. You know the fabric is not going to be tough when you can actually SEE the individual down clusters through the material, as you can with the Patagonia Down Sweater. Someday, who knows when, the pendulum will swing too far in the "ultralight" direction, and a lot of people will start getting mad that the expensive piece of gear they bought a little while ago didn't meet their durability expectations. The market will then correct itself, and eventually consumers will make purchasing decisions with more consideration given to durability. There is an obvious trajectory that we see in the store all the time: 1. Customer is just getting into activity. Customer buys introductory level piece of gear. 2. Customer gets better at activity, refines gear systems, and buys ultralight piece of gear. 3. Customer comes back, disappointed with ultralight gear's durability, and buys replacement that is slightly heavier and more durable. Boots, backpacks, and clothing are the main areas in which we see this happen.

This is going to be a VERY FUN night. The amount of stuff we have to give away is ridiculous. The new NTN bindings just came in today too so you could check them out. Big Blocks of Ice, Our biggest raffle yet, DJ's, ski movies, and gear - what else do you need on a rainy Wednesday. Hopefully we'll see you all here and we'll raise a bunch of money and awareness for the NWAC and maybe you'll go home with a new pair of sticks - or any number of other things. -

featheredfriends replied to featheredfriends's topic in Local Gear Shops
Graham will not be attending Rep Night. One FF staff member will be standing in for him and answering questions- not as good as the real thing, but better than nothing. Graham has sent us a good assortment of products to put on show and let folks try on, play with, etc. In addition to the Dyneema pack mentioned, we will have - 20L Worksack - 40L Worksack - 45L Worksack - 60L Worksack Come check them out and tell us which ones you like. FF is going to be Seattle's first Cilo Gear dealer, and since we haven't written our order yet, you can have input into which models you would like to see in the store. -

Here it is! The Famous Feathered Friends Rep Night! Wednesday November 7 at 7pm in the retail store. You may have come to these in the past, and this year some things will still be the same: - fund raiser for NWAC, a great local cause - beer! - tons and tons of excellent prizes to raffle off: this year we have several pairs of skis and boots, a Barryvox Pulse beacon, plenty of Arc'teryx and Cloudveil clothing, ice axes, the list is too long to print. This year some things will be different: - compete in Feats of Skill and Strength to win prizes - no slide show - new vendors will be represented (Cilo Gear packs will make their Seattle debut!) - Pray For Snow after party around the corner at SLUG (South Lake Union Grill) where the ski raffle will be held, drink specials will abound, and much fun will be had. - party will be co-sponsored by Snowboard Connection, so this year you can win some great snowboarding gear if that is what you are into. Raffle tickets are available for sale NOW at Feathered Friends and can even be purchased by phone. Ski Raffle: $10 each or 3 for $20. You don't need to be present to win, but you probably will want to be there. Winners get to choose their prize from the pool, so if you want that $700 pair of Scarpa ski boots, you can pick those instead of the Atomic skis. If you're not there to claim a prize, you get whatever is left over. Snowboard raffle: same story Clothing raffle: $5 each or 3 for $10. You must be present to win prizes at Rep Night. See you there!

FF End of Summer Sale: Aug. 24th - Sep. 3rd

We still have some Ravens (+10 degree with collar) at deep discount. Call us at 206 292 2210. -
We'd be amiss not to chime in here. To answer the fill power question: Fill power refers to the quality of the down. Frequently seen values of fill power are 600, 700, 800, and 850+. The easiest way to think of fill power is a measurement of the down's quality. The higher the number, the higher the quality. The technical nitty gritty is that the number represents the volume, in cubic inches, that one ounce of the down displaces when subjected to certain lab conditions that don't really reflect real world use. Products made with higher fill power down tend to be lighter, more compressible, and more durable, since you need less of it to fill the same space that would require more low-quality down to fill. Higher fill power down is also more highly processed, and will not deteriorate as fast as lower quality down. That being said, fill power is only one measurement of how warm a jacket or sleeping bag will keep you. The other important considerations are fill weight, fit, and design. Every single Feathered Friends garment and sleeping bag is made with 850+ fill down, but every product is filled with a different amount of down, or fill weight. For example, our Hyperion Vest has 3.1 ounces of down in it, whereas our -60 bag, the Snowy Owl, has 51 ounces. Other design elements, like the length of the jacket, how roomy it is, whether it is sewn-through or baffled, whether or not it has a hood, and what kind of shell fabric it's made of also determine how warm it will be. The specs on the North Face jackets do not include the important information of fill weight. The savvy shopper will want to know the fill weight of a down jacket before making a purchasing decision. It's an important part of the picture. These jackets you are looking at sure look nice, but consider that you could spend less money and buy a jacket that is hand made in Seattle using 850+ fill down and comes with a windproof and highly water resistant shell (Epic fabric, for example). It's true that welding baffles will eliminate the points of entry for water in the shell of a jacket, but what strikes me as strange is the fact that The North Face chose to make a welded jacket out of material that inherently has poor water resistant properties. The fabric used in the Elysium, 30D x 30D 49 g/m2 downproof ripstop nylon with DWR, will have extremely poor water resistance in the long run (it's just a DWR coated nylon), whereas fabrics such as Epic and Event will maintain a high degree of water resistance for many, many years. If you are willing to spend $330 on an Elysium Jacket that is filled with 700 power down and has limited water resistance, would you be willing to pay $289 for a Feathered Friends Volant jacket that is made with 850+ down and a highly water resistant shell fabric? The Volant lacks sexy welded baffles, but we have a lot of happy customers who have been satisfied with the ten or more years of service they have gotten out of their FF jackets. As an alternative to the $350 Catalyst you might also consider the Hooded Helios Jacket for $269. Drive through, please. FF

It was a GREAT show and since the show he did here he's freed an old aid line at Index. Check out this months issue of Climbing or R&I (I can't remember which one) for more details. -
The good news is that we finally received some of the new Reactor stoves today. If you don't know what they are, suffice it to say that the Reactor is the lightest, most efficient cook system around and beats the pants off Jetboils. The bad news is that MSR only shipped us two of them. If you want one of these, or both, make your move fast. $139.95 206 292 2210 The clock is ticking. Edited - the price is $139.95 not $149.95 as origianly posted.

We have gone through our rental department and decided to sell off more equipment than we originally thought we would. This just added: FF Frontpoint Down Jackets FF sleeping bags from +20 to -15. These are all in decent shape and still have lots of life left in them. We have been gradually adding new gear to our rental fleet and it is time to thin the herd a bit. We will also be selling a whole bunch of Atlas snowshoes. The last time we sold these off we unloaded the whole bunch within three or four days. I expect the same will happen this time around. Come in early on Friday if you want the best selection. Peace out, Napoleon. -

Good question. Our website does not currently have a shopping cart feature, so there will be no way to make purchases via the web. On the other hand, if you go to our website and scroll to the bottom of the front page, there is a link to join our email list. The sale announcement email will have a fairly detailed summary of what products will be on sale and at how big of a discount. This email should go out today, so do it soon. Other announcements will also be in the email, like a schedule of upcoming slide shows and events that might be of interest to you. If you don't live in/near Seattle, you can still buy stuff from the sale by calling the store. We make phone sales to all corners of the globe, so we'd be happy to send you what you want. -
Hey Kids, Time for our annual End of Summer Sale! We have a bunch of randonee and tele skis from our rental fleet we're getting rid of. We don't do this very often, so take advantage of some great deals. We also have some of our own jackets in limited edition fabrics we'll be putting on sale. Our summer stock needs to go to make room for our fall inventory, so there will be a ton on close-out!
