Hi Cascade Climbers, I'm looking into learning trad and I thought about making a post seeking a mentor but then I thought I would also look into taking a guided course.

Mountain Madness has a 2 day "intermediate rock course" for groups of 2 or 3 climbers for $295 and $250, respectively, that looks pretty good. I've been sport climbing for nearly 2 years and have done multi pitch sport so I have some skills.

If anyone is interested in the course, or wants to recommend a different course please respond here.

I'll be happy to be a belay slave but I only pay the pro's the professional rate ; ) That is unless you are a pro, in which case if you have a link to the guiding company you work for I'll check it out

But seriously, I have tons of free time and want to get out so if you're looking for a belay slave hit me up : )

I took a few courses from Mountain Madness when I first got into climbing, about 8 years ago. They provided a sound foundation for my climbing skills and safety awareness that has served me well ever since. I was particularly grateful to learn the basics from pro's before venturing out to climb with folks I didn't know so that I understood the risks involved.

You'll have your whole life to learn from experience or other partners, but if you have the time and resources to take a course to get you started on the right foot, I say go for it.

Edit: Re the post below, I second Cale's endorsement of NW Mtn School. Awesome folks!

Lukas,

I had a great very personal experience with Northwest Mountain School in Leavenworth. You can call them up anytime and they will formulate a course for you. By the morning of my second day of learning trad, I had done my first fist crack climb on a 5.7 (multiple pieces as big as #3) and lead it with gear. It was a great course and it was very laid back. NMS rocks. If you call em, tell em Cale sent ya: http://www.mountainschool.com/
