Devin27 Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 Hi all, Planning on heading that way this weekend for a day climb and wanted to see if anyone had been out there lately. How much snow is on the peak and how long till you encountered it? Ice axe, crampons? Stream crossings? Thanks, Devin Quote
TwoFortyJeff Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 Was there on 8/20. Bugs were mildly annoying, but not enough to warrant bug spray. Crampons were not needed. There were a few 10-30 ft sections of steep and hard snow with a bad runout that, in my opinion, warranted an ice axe. Others may disagree. In a week it may all be gone. You can scramble above or below most of it if you want. It was a fun scramble. I would recommend skipping Windy Pass and heading up cross country around 5000ft. Stream crossings were either very small or bridged with a log. Quote
Tony_Bentley Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 Even if there is snow, you won't need crampons or even an ice axe. Depends on your level of comfort on snow. Quote
Devin27 Posted August 22, 2011 Author Posted August 22, 2011 Thanks all. You were spot on. Bugs were pretty aggressive and seemed to like the taste of our bug spray. Snow was not an issue at all. 2 or 3 small snow fields near the summit which were easily crossed with no problems. They could be avoided all together if you stay on the rock while traversing to the ridge. I'll post a full TR when I finish going through my photos Quote
