billcoe Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 Anyone thinking of doing the multi-massively awesome combo platter trip (Rockclimbing, fishing, free hot tubbing in the woods in old growth logs, kayaking/rafting/swimming) and thinking of the perfectly sited Indian Henry C.G. as a base camp needs to reconsider. (it's going to be wet up there Saturday anyway and it's too cold to swim) Closed. indefinitely. Loose trees they say. http://www.oregonlive.com/clackamascounty/index.ssf/2011/07/hazardous_trees_cause_closure.html Remember when the Forest Service not only knew what a chainsaw was, but ran them? TRoth Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 I'm involved with the state hazard tree program and... I'm not fully aware of the closure, but most likely it will become a day use only. I had a hazard tree training in there and it's well known as the most hazardous campground in Oregon. It is an old growth forest and the site is riddles with rood rots, stem rots, heart rots, ( fruiting bodies- conks) wind throw trees, and frost damaged trees. I'm all for closing it. It's only a matter of time before one of those trees kills someone. They have an average height of 130'. To keep any one of the camp sites safe, they would need to just about clear cut it. The closure of Oswald west st park to day use was oregons controversial closure to day use, to protect ancient forest and people in harmony. Quote
TRoth Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 The forest service knows how and when to run saws. They have also already removed the most hazardous trees. There is a time and place for people to take hit to preserve the natural resource we live with, recreate in, and live for. Quote
