MT Seminars Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 (edited) Join us for The Olympic Marmot: A Pleistocene Relic in a Rapidly Changing World at Mountaineers Program Center. March 15 at 7pm No fee. Registration not required. Members and non-members welcome. Marmota Olympus, the Olympic marmot, is a species found only in our own Olympic Mountains. Beloved of Olympic hikers, these large furry creatures are a highlight of any alpine trip in the range. But the Olympic marmot has declined in recent years and climate change further threatens the species. Since 2001, wildlife biologist Sue Griffin has been directing field research into the severity and causes of recent declines, and is seeking to understand how climate change will affect the Olympic marmot in the future. She and her assistants have studied the animals’ distribution, life cycle, and population dynamics. She received a PhD from University of Montana in 2007. Dr. Griffin will share slides of marmots, talk about their engaging lives and social habits, and bring us up to date on her findings. Edited February 26, 2011 by MT Seminars
