All seminars are free. See details below. Mountaineers Program Center 7700 Sand Point Way NE Seattle, WA 981157 all seminars starts at 7pm March 5: Ultralight Packing by Paul Griffith Is your pack light enough? Do you start up Rainier with 25 lb; including overnight gear, climbing gear, food, water, fuel, the rope, and the stove? On a 500 mile hike, does your gear weigh five to eight pounds (not counting the running shorts, T-shirt, floppy hat, and sneakers)? This evening’s talk will introduce packs, sleeping bags, and tents from two pounds to under a pound, cook sets that weigh ounces, night-and-day gear like the poncho and sleeping "quilt", and matching camping techniques. March 13: Conditioning for Mountaineering and Alpine Climbing by Stefanie Schiller Do you need to get in shape for the upcoming climbing season and don't know where to start? If so, this seminar is for you. Come and learn about what you need to do in order to get in shape for mountaineering and alpine climbing, how to build a training plan on limited time, how to incorporate weights into your training, how to fuel yourself during training and on the climb, as well what you can do to recover faster. March 20: Nutrition for Alpine Climbing by Amanda Bullat Looking to push yourself to new heights this climbing/hiking season? Amanda Bullat MS RDN from Passionate Nutrition will explain the benefits of eating whole foods to fuel any alpine adventure. Complete with tasty, light weight suggestions, recipes, and samples, this informative lecture will provide you with the nutritional knowledge of how to nourish your body and gain some serious elevation in the mountains! March 24: Altitude Illness by Andy Luks, MD Got plans to climb at high altitude? Not sure how you or your partners will tolerate high elevation? Come, hear this talk from local physician Andy Luks and learn about the important issues that can affect any trip to altitudes above 8,000 ft. Dr. Luks has conducted four field research studies, including two in the Alps. In 2003 he was a physician in residence at the Himalayan Rescue Association station in the Khumbu region of Nepal, on the approach to Mt. Everest. In 2007 he was the head of a medical mission in Ladakh India. In 2010 and 2012 he summited Denali as part of his medical work on a ranger patrol on the mountain. Altitude illness is a serious business and the best defense is knowledge. Come, get it from an expert, and along the way see some great photos of amazing places. March 27: Over-50 Alpine Conditioning by Courtenay and Doug Schurman Aches, pains and aging, oh my! This seminar offers proven training strategies for the over-50 alpine crowd, whether you have questions about suitable recovery or simply how to train smarter, rather than harder. Learn how to add targeted mountaineering-related stretches and strength movements that you can perform anywhere. Identify what your aerobic and anaerobic training zones are and how frequently to train for optimal recovery and performance. We will help answer your questions on how to get the most from your training regimen, whether you have concerns about cardiovascular, strength, or flexibility training. Climb leaders Courtenay and Doug Schurman have been working with mountaineering athletes since 1997 through their outdoor conditioning coaching business, www.bodyresults.com. They are authors of the Train to Climb Mt. Rainier training DVD and The Outdoor Athlete (2009).

  3. Please join the Mountaineers for Expedition Planning - Aconcagua seminar by Vikram Sahney on February 24 Vik Sahney is one of about 350 people to have climbed the 7 Summits, the tallest peak on each continent, completing his quest in January 2011. As part of that quest, he climbed Aconcagua's technical Polish Direct route in January 2008 with three friends. Come hear about his experience and learn how to plan your own Aconcagua expedition. While we will cover details oriented around Aconcagua, this seminar will also cover general expedition planning skills which are applicable to other international climbing destinations. Aconcagua is a reasonable goal for most strong basics and intermediates to aim for. Located in Argentina, near the border with Chile, it is the highest mountain in South America at a height of 22,902' (nearly 7,000m). Being in the southern hemisphere, the climbing season is best from December through March. However, the weather can be extremely cold and windy anytime. It is a straightforward climb via the normal routes with no real objective danger except for the vicious weather. You carry everything yourself above base camp (mules can carry gear to BC on Aconcagua) and there is no support high on the mountain from porters or Sherpas like in Nepal. Photographs and videos of Aconcagua climbs will be shown. 7 pm Free The Mountaineers Program Center 7700 Sand Point Way NE Seattle, WA 981157 Please join us for all upcoming seminars at the Mountaineers. 02/25 Mountain Weather by Dennis D'Amico Dennis D'Amico is an avalanche meteorologist with the Northwest Avalanche Center. 13. The Mountaineers and OR present an evening with world class climber: Chad Kellogg Join us for an evening with world class climber Chad Kellogg as he takes us on an amazing ten-day climbing adventure of the SW Ridge of Singuniang Shan, a 6250-meter peak in the Changpin Valley in Sichuan, China. Chad completed this climb with his climbing partner Dylan Johnson. For the first three days the route involved climbing through steep rainforest, free climbing up to 5.11, numerous bivies on the 2000-foot granite wall in stormy weather and complicated aid climbing. On day four, the character of the route changed to remarkable alpine ridge climbing on snow covered rock in increasingly deteriorating weather and requiring mixed climbing. After eight days, Chad and Dylan finally reached the summit, right before a lightning storm hit. The way down was no less challenging with diminishing food supplies and by the end of the climb, Dylan lost over 30 pounds and Chad over 20. This was a transformative climb and one of the most significant adventures for both climbers. Chad Kellogg: The First Ascent of the SW Ridge of Siguniang Shan, a 72-pitch Super Alpine Adventure December 12 at 8pm free admission, all are welcome The presentation will be preceded by an Ultralight Alpine Climbing Clinic with Chad December 12 at 7pm registration required please register at www http://www.mountaineers.org/source/atrips/TripRegister.cfm?Event=33147 or by calling The Mountaineers Both events held at The Mountaineers Program Center 7700 Sand Point Way NE Seattle, WA 98115 206.521.6001 We’ll be selling raffle tickets for OR and Petzl gear with the proceeds going towards a toilet at Vantage. 14. There are still spots available for Planning and Routefinding Seminar with Peter Clitherow! Taken the alpine scrambling or basic climbing class, but not sure how to organize a trip? Back by popular demand on the fifth occasion, this seminar is for you! Designed for the needs of the climbing and scrambling community, we will spend the first evening outlining how to plan and organize a trip by picking up where the navigation class leaves off. How to assess different terrain on topographic maps, how to estimate travel times, how to pick interesting routes and more. The second evening will be spent planning in detail an outing to be undertaken by seminar participants with the leader (a scramble and climb leader). Typically, we will plan an off trail, back-country route somewhere in the Alpine Lakes wilderness area, though if participants wish, the North Cascades and Olympics are fair game too. In either late July or August depending on participant availability, we will do the planned weekend outing on non-technical (scramble) terrain. Packs will be fairly light, as we'll have only backpacking and scramble gear. Participation in the field trip is optional. Prerequisites: None for the evening classroom seminars, for the field trip, a navigation card and being a student or graduate of the climbing or scrambling class. Registration necessary. The Mountaineers members and non-members welcome. Activity Fee: Member: $25.00 / Non Member: $30.00 Two evening meetings plus field trip in July or August. Participation in the field trip is optional. Click here to register When: June 12 and 26, 2012 at 7pm Field Trip in July or August Where: The Mountaineers Program Center – Seattle Goodman B Room 7700 Sand Point Way NE Seattle, WA 98115
  15. Join us for the Weather Forecasting for Mountaineers Seminar by Michael Fagin at the Mountaineers Center Understanding and predicting mountain weather is a critical skill. Come learn from an expert. Michael Fagin is founder of Washington Online Weather (www.wowweather.com) and Everest Weather (www.everestweather.com), an Alpine Scramble grad and a professional weather forecaster. Mike will explain weather planning you need to climb peaks at home or around the world. He will begin with a discussion of weather patterns during our popular climbing season here in the Pacific Northwest, explaining the “machinery" of mountain weather - what forces give us wet or dry conditions, how to predict what’s headed our way. He will tell us where to find the best weather information before leaving home, and then will discuss forecasting in the field: What do various cloud formations portend? Does that shift of wind direction mean anything? Is that gray sky benign or is it time to turn tail and scat? However, Mike also does forecasting for international expeditions, including Mt. Everest. He will cover typical weather patterns in the Andes and Himalayas, and will explain how modern communications allow climbers to get weather data and forecasts even in remote locales. This hour long program will provide you with all the tools you need to make an accurate forecast but not bogged down with all the technical jargon. Reduce your mountain misery quotient. Learn skills to help you keep dry, happy and safe. Would you like to know more about Mike's work? Check out: Washington Online Weather www.wowweather.com Fagin Weather World www.faginweatherworld.blogspot.com Everest Weather www.everestweather.com Michael Fagin talks about weather and the best places to hike, ski or snowshoe. Broadcast every Tuesday at 9:50 am on KUOW 94.9 FM Seattle. Also on the web at http://kuow.org/listen/ No registration necessary. No fee. The Mountaineers members and non-members welcome. When: Thursday, April 5 at 7pm Where: The Mountaineers Program Center – Seattle Goodman B Room 7700 Sand Point Way NE Seattle, WA 98115
