alienPDX Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 Personal opinions regarding dogs on climbs aside, can anyone tell me if it is relatively safe/do-able to bring a [behaved, controlled, and alpine-experienced] dog up Mt. Daniel (SE route from Cathredral Pass/Peggy's Pond)? It looks like a fairly straightforward glacier hike and rock/ridge scramble, but I would be interested in hearing opinions from people who have been up this time of year. Thanks! Quote
Bronco Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 Have you checked to see if Mt. Daniel is in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness area? I'm not sure dogs are allowed in there but interested in if they are.... Quote
NealH Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 Dogs are allowed in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, but not in the areas around the Stuart Range (i.e., Enchantments, Ingalls areas). The official policy in the area where he is going used to be voice control, but it may be on-leash required now. I am not completely sure. We've taken our dog up to Peggy's Pond, but not up the ridge to Daniel, so I can't help the OP on that point. Quote
JoshK Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I can't say I have much experience with dogs in the alpine and what they are capable of, but I can say the route up Daniel from Peggy's Pond is quite easy and, as I recall, nothing much more than a hike. I remember crossing one short section of glacier but it wasn't very steep or broken. In my uneducated opinion, I'd think a strong dog would make it up there. Quote
mkporwit Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 Not quite Mt. Daniel, but Mt. Hinman is close enough, isn't it? Quote
alienPDX Posted July 30, 2010 Author Posted July 30, 2010 Sounds like I'll give it a shot. Thanks! Quote
SmilingWhiteKnuckles Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 I recently climbed it and if you're not doing the SE ridge, but sticking to snow, it shouldn't be a problem if your dog can handle 35degree snow slopes. The Peggy's Pond trail is pretty steep too, but I imagine an alpine dog could handle. Beautiful area! See photos: Quote
fgw Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 went up there with our dog and it was allowed (at least in '03). se ridge - no issues, though she chose to sit out the final 30' scramble. Quote
