Hopefully NPS has some luck today ... weather is moving is this weekend. http://www.adn.com/outdoors/story/805121.html Search continues for missing McKinley climber Published: May 22nd, 2009 11:59 AM Last Modified: May 22nd, 2009 12:00 PM The National Park Service is continuing its search today for a missing Colorado climber on Mount McKinley. Gerald Myers, 41, was last seen Wednesday afternoon as he climbed the ridge approaching McKinley's 20,320-foot summit. Two searchers boarded a fixed-wing, twin-engine airplane this morning to circle the top of the mountain and look for Myers. Rangers will also be sending up a helicopter, said Maureen McLaughlin, park service spokeswoman. Clouds have cleared since yesterday, allowing for the aerial searches, she said. Spotters will be looking for Myers or any sign of him, including lone foot tracks or his red jacket or black pants. The spotters will also be taking aerial photographs, which will be blown up and technically manipulated back at park headquarters to see if there is anything the naked eye didn't see, McLaughlin said. By manipulating contrasts on the photos, rangers can more easily spot snow tracks. It's a technique the park service began using last year with pretty good success, she said. Myers, from Centennial, Colo., had skis but little survival gear with him, she said. There are 411 climbers currently on the mountain. The last week of May and beginning of June is the busiest time to climb North America's tallest peak. Quote
