Wy'East or Leuthold: 5-23/5-24

Myself along with 2 other climbers are planning on climbing Hood this Saturday/Sunday. We are debating between the Wy'East and Leuthold Routes. We were originally thinking about Wy'East, but with the mass amounts of snow and avy conditions we are thinking possibly Leuthold.

 

Thoughts-Suggestions-Recommendations?????

 

If we do go Leuthold what is your advice on gear?

Depends on how you would like to enter Valhalla.

 

Some people use screws, pickets, and ropes and two tools on Leutholds. So just go at it solo with only an axe and pons. It all depends on conditions. Last weekend I heard of several parties being shut down early by icefall at the hourglass.

Go crazy early for either route this weekend, seriously. Be on the summit by 6am for Luethold's and 5am for Wy'East. Otherwise plan on buying a new helmet if you're on Leuthold's any later. And the sun hits Wy'East at about 4:45am this time of year, so expect it to get soft.
